Augmented Learning Systems is an E-Learning educational system for children with special needs. An audio-visual lesson provides the right feedback for the child as he / she is able to visualize the content and understand the concept rather than memorizing it.
With more than a decade and half of experience in working with children with special needs, we were able to identify the strengths and weaknesses of not just children but also the systems that are currently in place. This includes the educational instructions, the level of engagement of the student, and the overall learning experience.
We have made an attempt to work on these things to enable children to learn effortlessly while also ensuring that the learning is relatively permanent.
We are about to launch the new business soon. We solicit your wishes and blessings and more importantly your feedback on how to make it better.

Augmented Learning Systems is an e-learning business. This is run as a partnership firm by a trio comprising of a physiotherapist, an inclusive educator and a parent of a child with special needs. This is an age of gadgets and digital information. Children are easily exposed to a variety of gadgets and spend a lot of non-productive hours on them. At ALS, we strive to make the technology assist in learning. Children with special needs have difficulty following the ‘chalk and talk’ method followed in schools. Learning becomes easier with animations since they involve more than one senses. Animations are interactive, hence the child is no longer a passive recipient of a lecture. He / she is an active partner in learning. They are able to regulate the speed of learning.
With more than a decade and half of experience in working with children with disabilities, we at ALS, realized that children with special needs have unique ways of learning. We set about with a plan of adapting our strategies that help a child learn a new skill like buttoning or catching a ball, into academics and other conceptual learning.
When we just teach them without allowing them to make mistakes, they more often than not, memorize the steps and do it. We assume that they have learnt the skill. Memory has a limited capacity in our brain, it is usually superimposed by more recent events. When we revisit this skill after a week or a month, we realize that the child has forgotten it altogether. And then we have to start afresh. This is not practical. This is because he was not allowed to learn on his own, by making mistakes. We found that children learn with Trial and Error. When they make a mistake, they remember what they should not be doing. At the same time, children with special needs have a low frustration tolerance. What does this mean? It means that they get frustrated very easily. As a result, they give up trying at the first sign of failure. So what shall we do now? Allow them to make mistakes so that they can learn independently or not allow them to make mistakes because they get frustrated easily. Needless to say, most often these frustrations are manifested as a problem behaviour. So we had to find a common ground.
Children with special needs are often unsuccessful in their attempts at a new task. These failures that had built over a period of time, make them defensive. They get into their shell and are scared to try something new. More often we see them stick to the same toy or the same game, even though there is nothing new for them to learn from it. We are tempted to call it stereotypical play. But it is not so… They are stuck with a toy / game because they do not know how to play anything else. We realized that what they need is INSTANT SUCCESS! New things that are taught should be so easy that they are able to find success quickly.
To start with, we focus on success as a feedback. They feel good when they are successful. It increases their motivation as well as sustained attention in a task. This means that the challenge offered by the task has to be very very simple. After encountering repeated success, their confidence level shoots up. A failure at this point of time stimulates them further. They become eager to find a solution to the challenge. This instant success builds confidence in them. This confidence prepares them to encounter failure… with a smile! Thus there is continuous engagement of the child in the learning process.
