Sandos seem to be the in thing in the city so we decided to go to an artisinal sandwich bar to try some.
Panino is at Besantnagar's 27th Cross Street. A cute, cozy place and at sunset, the warm glow of the lights are so welcoming.

Lots of niches along the walls where there are jars of pasta, pickled beetroot and knick knacks. There's a display case that holds pesto jars, cookies & desserts. We are mesmerised by their chunky stuffed cookies and make a mental note to try one.

They make their own breads, both ciabatta and focaccia are highly recommended by the young man who runs the place.

From the Meat Board, we ordered Hog that came stuffed with slices of ham, salami & bacon and lots of rucola.

Pulled goat focaccia is stuffed with confit garlic, pulled roasted lamb, lettuce, mayo & jalapeΓ±os. They definitely don't stint on the filling but the bread was rather crusty.

The sandwiches are pretty filling and on the pricey side but that's ok, considering there was a lot of filling in them.

A peach ice tea and milo shake later, we were ready for the pistachio stuffed cookie. Now that was quite a treat, warm and positively oozing with the goodness of pistachio paste.

The Malaysian Journey

Chef Shivajee is back in Chennai and he's serving up Malaysian food, tapas style, at Crystal Woo. Serves both veg & non veg.

The plates were small but the flavours were big. Crab cutlet, coated in a mild sauce was good. 2 stalwarts, fruit rojak and roti jala with kurma, followed in quick succession. Chef had warned us that he was not using ingredients like hie ko (prawn paste that gives the distinctive taste to rojak) to cater to local tastes. Roti jala was cleverly made with the meat inside the roll and gravy around it.

Satay and juicy chilli oil wantan came next. The wantan was so good, the oil giving it necessary oomph!

I asked for a soupy laksa. It came with a large prawn, sambal, egg and his famous hand pulled noodles!

Only one way to describe it - DEE LIC IOUS.

After having "laksa" at restaurants in Chennai, it finally felt good to be having the real thing. If soupy is not your preference, you can have the dry version.

And definitely do not miss Chef's version of radish cake.

There was also a very pretty sarong dimsum though I preferred the taste of the earlier wantan. The only disappointment was the chicken rice, the flavours were too subdued to be noticed.

Banana fritters with ice cream and caramel sauce was the dessert. Husband liked it. My son and I don't eat banana πŸ™„. Chef decided to give us kaya toast instead πŸ˜„

This promotion is on till the end of June and priced at 1399/.
Crystal Woo is at Oyster, KNK Road.

Kueh lapis legit is such a labour of love. And money!! It need about 15 eggs, a whole lot of butter and immense patience.

It's grilled layer by layer - (mine had about 14 of them). The last time I baked this cake must have been about 30 years ago. I had a tiny oven & ended up with burns on my hands trying to pull the tin out.

It's lot easier now & I'm seriously wondering why it took me so long to make it!

As kids, we would peel it layer by layer before eating it.
I guess old habits never die πŸ˜‚
