A tricky acronym tip to help remember some of the different usages of modal verbs:
PLOP NORMS
P - Permission (may, can, could)
Example: May I borrow your pen? You can go to the party.
L - Lack of Obligation/Necessity (don't have to, needn't)
Example: You don't have to finish it today. You needn't come if you're tired.
O - Obligation (must, should, ought to)
Example: You must follow the rules. You should study harder.
P - Possibility (may, might, could)
Example: It may rain today. That could be the reason.
N - Necessity (must, have to, need to)
Example: I must leave now. You have to submit it by Monday.
O - Offer (shall, can, could)
Example: Shall I open the window for you? I could help with that.
R - Request (can, could, may)
Example: Can you pass me the salt? Could you speak louder?
M - Modality (will, would, should)
Example: He will succeed if he works hard. I would go if I could.
S - Speculation (may, might, could)
Example: He may be running late. They could already be there.
Using PLOP NORMS covers a wide range of modal verb uses - from permission and obligation to possibility, necessity, requests and speculation. Memorizing this acronym can jog your memory on the different shades of meaning modal verbs can express when writing or speaking English. It's a handy trick for modals!

What is an assessment quiz?
