Over 100 participants from industry, NGOs, transport associations, corporates and allied sectors came together in Mumbai today for the 6th Vision & Road Safety (VARS) Conference 2026, hosted by India Vision Institute, Mission for Vision, Sightsavers India and VisionSpring Foundation.

The two impactful panel discussions and keynote addresses brought out one message clearly: vision care must be recognised as a critical pillar of road safety. From the risks and hazards of uncorrected vision among commercial drivers to the role of new technology, corporates, fleet owners and eye care providers in building sustainable solutions, the summit called for collective action.

VARS2026 has opened with a shared vision: bringing vision health to the heart of the road safety agenda.

With a call to recognise vision as an integral part of road safety, the conference has set the tone for safer and more inclusive mobility. Through policy dialogue and industry-led discussions, today’s sessions will strengthen the case for eye health as a critical pillar of road safety.

What began as a small seed sown by the Vision and Road Safety (VARS) partners, India Vision Institute, Mission for Vision, Sightsavers India and VisionSpring, has today grown into a powerful movement with over 2.5 million commercial vehicle drivers screened so far, helping make roads safer across India.

The 6th VARS Conference opens at the Yashwantrao Chavan Centre, Nariman Point, Mumbai tomorrow. IVI's CEO Vinod Daniel will moderate a panel session that will bring together leaders from healthcare, transport, industry and CSR partners to focus on a critical yet often overlooked link - vision and road safety. From occupational hazards faced by drivers to building safer, more sustainable mobility systems, it will dive into solutions that can transform lives and livelihoods.

A privilege to welcome some of the most respected voices in India’s eye-care sector to IVI.

Dr G N Rao, Founder-Chair, LV Prasad Eye Institute; Vivek Mendonsa, Director – Marketing, Lawrence & Mayo; Ramachandran P, eyewear adviser and consultant; and Mervin Alexander, former senior bureaucrat, spent time with our team on 4 March.

A highlight was Dr Rao’s illuminating talk to our management staff, tracing his life’s journey with candour, clarity, and purpose, and reminding us why making eye care accessible is work worth doing every day.

Thank you for your time, wisdom and encouragement.
