Design of shaft subjected by variable stress is solved ,of course it is one of the Anna University and JNTU standard question is being asked in the terminal examination ,problem is solved by using Soderberg’s equation and Goodman’s
it is interesting to note that there is a change of ultimate stress to yield stress is explained in this posting ,again why this change will be known to you if you look at fracture of Ductile and brittle material the failure is due to ultimate stress for brittle material and failure of ductile material is due to yield stress
