🎬 Mastering Rhythm & Flow: Workshop by Mr. B. Lenin 🎬

Film Editing and Filmmaking students of LIVE, Loyola College had the privilege of attending an insightful workshop by Mr. B. Lenin, acclaimed filmmaker, editor, director, and recipient of multiple National Film Awards.

During the session, Mr. Lenin spoke in depth about the concept of “editing flow”, emphasizing that editing goes beyond assembling shots—it is about shaping emotional and narrative rhythm. He highlighted the editor’s role in understanding the director’s vision, actor performances, and the overall mood of a film to create a seamless cinematic experience.

He shared his professional experiences editing song sequences, explaining the importance of rhythm cuts, where edits align with musical beats, tempo, and emotional shifts. To demonstrate this, he screened the director’s cut of a song from one of his films and compared it with his own refined edit, clearly showing how structured, rhythm-based cuts can elevate both impact and audience engagement.

Mr. Lenin also reflected on his collaboration with maestro Ilaiyaraaja, particularly on the iconic song “Shenbagame”. His anecdotes revealed how an editor’s deep understanding of music, pacing, and melody plays a crucial role in bringing such compositions to life on screen.

🎬 Cinema with Purpose: A Guest Lecture by Director G. Vasanthabalan 🎬

 Film Making Film editing and Cinematography students of LIVE, Loyola College had the privilege of attending an inspiring guest lecture by renowned Tamil film director Mr. G. Vasanthabalan, known for his impactful films Veyil, Angadi Theru, and Kaaviya Thalaivan.

During the session, he shared valuable insights into the current landscape of Tamil cinema, highlighting the growing divide between commercial formulas and meaningful, content-driven storytelling. He emphasized the importance of originality and urged aspiring filmmakers to focus on stories that truly connect with audiences.

Mr. Vasanthabalan also spoke about cinema’s powerful influence on society, especially on the younger generation. He expressed concern over the increasing portrayal of graphic violence and sensationalism, reminding us of our responsibility as filmmakers to create awareness and inspire positive change.

Sharing personal experiences from his journey, he spoke candidly about the challenges of staying true to one’s vision in a commercial industry. His honesty and clarity encouraged us to reflect on our purpose in choosing cinema as a path.

🎥 Behind the Lens: An Interactive Session with Cinematographer Ezhil Arasu K 🎥

Cinematography, Filmmaking, and Film Editing students of LIVE, Loyola College had the privilege of attending an engaging guest lecture by Mr. Ezhil Arasu K, who shared practical insights from his experience working across diverse genres and production scales.

During the session, he spoke about the key differences between shooting emotional dramas and sports/action films—from controlled lighting and subtle framing to wide coverage, fast decision-making, and physically demanding camera work. He emphasized that maintaining clarity and energy in action sequences remains one of the biggest challenges for cinematographers.

Mr. Ezhil Arasu also discussed the importance of shot division, explaining how large-scale and technically complex productions rely heavily on it, while smaller, performance-driven films demand a deeper understanding of the director’s vision, emotional beats, and actor blocking.

He highlighted the need for thorough preparation through script breakdowns and location recces, stressing how understanding natural light, space, and camera movement helps avoid on-set challenges.

Sharing experiences from Bison, he spoke about lighting a large Kabaddi ground and problem-solving complex shots like the bison skull drowning sequence—demonstrating the importance of adaptability and creative thinking on set.

He also compared anamorphic and spherical lenses, reminding us that lens choices should always serve the story and not just follow trends. The session concluded with insights into the realities of low-budget filmmaking, offering a grounded perspective on patience, planning, and resilience.
