On this Photography Day, our B.Des 3rd Year student Nilofar Afrah shares what it means to be the one behind the frame.

"A photograph is more than a moment held still. It is a little piece of time that refuses to disappear.
Some moments pass so quietly that we never realise how precious they were until they become memories. A smile that lasted only a second, laughter filling a room, a sky painted without an artist, an animal being loved, tired hands still working, sunlight resting on an old wall, a shadow falling across the floor, a flower growing through a crack. Simple things that ask for nothing, yet somehow hold so much.
There is an art in noticing what the world is too busy to look at.
In finding beauty in the unnoticed. In seeing how ordinary light can change a familiar place, how someone's hands can tell a story without words, how a passing expression can carry an entire feeling. Not everything beautiful arrives asking to be noticed. Some things have to be looked at a little longer.
And then there is the quiet act of preserving them.
Because the things we capture are not always grand. Sometimes they are just small pieces of an ordinary day that we know, somewhere inside us, we may one day miss.
There is also a strange sadness in always being the one behind the frame.
Everyone finds their place inside the memory, while the eyes that preserved it remain outside. A group picture holds everyone's laughter, everyone's presence, everyone together, except the one who stood behind the moment and made sure it would exist beyond that day.
It hurts, but there is beauty in it too.
Because it was never only about being seen. It was about seeing.
Seeing people as they are. Seeing beauty where it was never deliberately placed. Seeing the little things that disappear almost as soon as they happen, and giving them a place to stay.
The greatest feeling is when the person inside the frame looks at it and feels something. When a simple picture brings back an entire moment, a voice, a place, a feeling that time had slowly carried away.
It is not always about how perfect the frame is. It is about the feeling behind the eyes that looked through it. A moment becomes beautiful when it is noticed with love and held with care.
Because a lens can preserve a moment, but it is the heart that notices why it mattered.
Someday, people will change, places will disappear, voices will become memories, and moments that once felt ordinary will become impossible to relive.
But a photograph remains quietly saying,
You were here.
You laughed here.
You loved here.
This moment happened.
And maybe that is the beauty of noticing.
To look at the world a little longer than necessary, to find poetry in its simplest corners, and to hold onto the moments that were never meant to stay.
So that one day, when we miss the life we once lived, we still have somewhere to return to."
