Students ransack private university in Selaiyur after flunking exams
Students of a private university in Selaiyur near Tambaram wreaked havoc, pelting stones and breaking window panes of the college offices on Monday afternoon. The reason: Many of them flunked the recent examinations.
Around noon, the students of Bharath University went around the campus, damaging furniture and glass doors. They got into the laboratories and started shouting. All hell broke loose when a section of the students in different engineering courses gathered to express their anguish over second, fourth and sixth semester results published last week. They said that the number of students getting low marks and those failing in the exams was higher than usual, alleging discrepancies in the evaluation.
More students joined in gradually and they raised slogans against the management. Soon, a few hundred students assembled at the main administrative building and went on a rampage. Police rushed to the university, but the students would not let them on the campus. However, senior officers with a team of policemen managed to enter the campus and brought the situation under control.
University officials decided to cancel the results and promised to publish fresh results in a week. The campus will remain closed till September 15. The college management has asked hostel students to vacate the campus.
Bharat University chief executive officer V Krishnan said, "On Monday morning, during the break a group of students protested in front of the vice-chancellor's office. We had published the results on our website on Friday. We have no control over the results as it is being handled by the controller of examinations. We have told the students they can apply for revaluation free of cost."
