Teething can start anywhere from 3 to 12 months, with the average age of babies getting teeth being around 9 months. Usually the bottom two front teeth (incisors) arrive first, followed by the top two front teeth (incisors), however teeth can arrive in any order. In some rare cases babies may even be born with 1 or 2 teeth.

Teething can be uncomfortable for babies, making them upset and unsettled. It can be difficult to know if your baby is unsettled because of teething or for another reason. Here are some signs that your baby might be teething:
- Dribbling and I mean lots of dribble
- More frequent bowel movements that might be more runny than normal
- Unsettled day and night
- Rosy cheeks
- Fussy at the breast and more frequent feedings
- Chewing EVERYTHING
- Dribble rash
- Little teeth breaking through

Some tips for helping your baby who is teething:
- Cold teething toy
- Wash your hands and gently rub your baby’s gums
- If your baby is having solid foods, offer softer foods so they don’t need to chew as much
- Always check with a medical professional before using any baby specific teething gels and pain relief

It is important to not use any toothpaste until your baby is 18 months old. Instead, use a clean damp facecloth to wipe the front and back of each tooth.

Amber teething necklaces do not have research to support their use and are a choking hazard, so should not be used.

“I took my sons (pictured here 12yo & 10yo) to the zoo this week. A mama gorilla was very tenderly nursing her 2-year-old baby.

A young male zookeeper was there, answering questions. He looked fresh out of college and a bit awkward, but was very enthusiastic about the animals.

My 10-year-old son asked him: “How long do baby gorillas nurse for?”

The zookeeper responded: “Oh, usually about 3 to 5 years. Do you have any guesses as to why humans don’t *usually* breastfeed their babies that long?”

My knee-jerk reaction was to be mortified that this young man was about to say something ignorant. My 12 and 10-year-old sons froze, unsure of how to answer the question.

Thankfully, the young zookeeper didn’t skip a beat. He immediately answered his own question:

“Because, sadly, the human community doesn’t help out human mothers in the same way that the gorilla community helps out gorilla mothers. All the gorillas in the group look after the baby and support the mama. This way, the mama gorilla can get the breaks and rest she needs. You see, all of the gorillas work together to make sure the baby can get the healthiest start possible.”

Words and picture from Jess K. Thank you for allowing me to share!

**This is in no way to shame non-breastfeeding parents. Just sharing a very interesting story about gorillas and how long they feed their babies!**

Milk ducts increase when baby 2 comes... each grape represents a milk duct!!

FUN FACT FRIDAY ABOUT MILK-MAKING. Did you know you grow more milk-making cells in your breasts with each pregnancy? So the more pregnancies you have, the more grapes (erhm.. I mean milk-making cells) you’ll have! 🍇

Were you a first time mom struggling with milk supply like me? I don’t think a day went by where I didn’t think about ways to at least keep up my supply.

Second time around? A BOUNTIFUL supply! Now there are many factors for this, but one is because the hormone changes that you go through in pregnancy help your body make more milk-making cells. So in addition to the ones you had from your last pregnancy, you’ll have some more!

Pretty neat huh? So if your breastfeeding journey didn’t work out the way you wanted to your first time, it likely won’t be the same the second time around (for many reasons, having more milk-making cells being one of them!) 🙌🏻

I’ll have way more information like this on my website, where the launch is coming in March. Be the first to know! Link in the bio or go to breastfeedingdietitian.com 🤱
