Our Teacher
Swami Brahmavidananda Saraswati is a traditional and contemporary teacher of Vedanta. Formerly a marine engineer, Swamiji as a youth was inspired by H.H. Swami Chinmayananda. Swamiji studied Vedanta under H.H. Swami Dayananda Saraswati in Sandeepany, Mumbai 1976–78. Later, he spent seven years at Rishikesh in the Himalayas, doing advanced studies in Vedanta under various traditional teachers like Swami Tarananda Giri and Swami Hari Hara Teertha. Since 1985, he has been based in Mumbai, unfolding the vision of Vedanta in his classes.

Everything is consciousness. Even when the object keeps changing, the "is" aspect remains unchanged. Consciousness "is" and it remains throughout no matter what the circumstances may be. Every object, every person, every thing, every concept is pervaded by consciousness.

Understanding the presence of consciousness is complicated by the many orders of reality we live with, and our own inability to see beyond the differences we face in form.

Understanding that differences shine only in the presence of undifferentiated consciousness is the only way to understand the truth we seek.

A flower is, because it is evident to you. All that is seen and experienced is evident to you, the seer the experiencer. Similarly your body, its functions and your emotions are evident to you. Knowledge or ignorance is also evident to you.

What is there and is not there is so because the presence and absence is evident to you.

So, this "you" to whom all this is evident - is this "you" evident to you? No, 'I' is self-evident.

In the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna teaches Arjuna that the self-evident I alone is satyam - and that the universe around us draws its existence from that self-evident I.

Choice of action is a privilege given to the human being. But any action is preceded by cognition first, to know more, even the choice to know you have to make, action follows. So, the human being is essentially a knower not a doer. Doing is by choice, by exercise of free will. This we all should know. The pursuit of knowledge is also a choice. But in knowledge there is no choice. But like in any knowledge, a prepared mind is necessary. Knowing takes place when certain conditions of preparedness of mind for knowledge to take place are put in place.

About Our Teacher:
Swamini Brahmaprajnananda Saraswati has dedicated her life to serving the Vedic tradition by teaching Advaita Vedanta. Formerly a psychologist, Swamini ji was a direct disciple of Pujya Swami Dayananda Saraswati ji. She studied Vedanta, Sanskrit and Vedic chanting at Arsha Vidya Gurukulam in a residential, intensive three-year course in Coimbatore and Rishikesh. She studied with Swami Brahmavidananda alongside work commitments for about twelve years.

Through her regular Vedanta courses, podcast, videos and Vedanta retreats, she covers the depth and breadth of self-mastery to self-discovery. She founded the SHINE program for children and is the author of ‘You matter – Insights from Vedanta.’ Swamini ji teaches three core courses at the Hindu University of America.

Pursuit of purusharthas - be in this life or in the hereafter - does not eliminate the sadness and insecurity that we are saddled with.

Ultimately, we come to discover that there is no other way to overcome this insecurity, this deep-seated sadness unless we pursue the ultimate truth.This shift does not come without effort. While there is an inkling that our desire is actually for complete freedom, we have to come to understand that it can come only when we gain knowledge of the self. Thus, the desire for moksha or freedom converts to the desire to knowing the truth of oneself.

The leap in terms of shifting our desire from arthas and kamas to moksha, to the pursuit of the knowledge under the guidance of a teacher - is the quantum shift that Arjuna experienced, and which led him to surrender to Krishna as a sishya.

And it is the same shift that, when it comes in our life, will drive us to break free of the bonds of samsara.
