What happens when a child gets a small space at home that is truly their own?

Across our five Lighthouse Schools, more than 100 students now have a reading corner at home: a dedicated space where they can study, display academic charts, keep their timetable, read, revise and spend time learning.
But the most important part of a reading corner is not the space itself. It is the ownership that comes with it.

Children decide where their corner will be. They help design and organise it. They choose what goes on the walls. They create and put up their own timetable. They decide when they want to read, study or revise. Over time, this simple space becomes an opportunity to practise something much bigger: making choices, planning time, organising themselves and taking responsibility for their own learning.

Parents have an important role in making this possible. They help create the conditions for the corner, provide the materials they can, encourage children to use the space and, importantly, give them the freedom to make it their own. The aim is not for parents to create another timetable for children to follow. It is for children to experience what it means to create and take ownership of their own routine.

For us, this is where the reading corner becomes a student agency intervention. A timetable made by a child is a first experience of planning. A space organised by a child is a first experience of ownership. Choosing what to read is a first experience of making learning choices. Returning to that space every day is a first experience of building responsibility and self-directed learning.

These may seem like small shifts. But agency is often built through exactly these everyday opportunities to decide, act and take responsibility.
More than 100 children across five Lighthouse Schools now have a space at home that belongs to their learning.

And perhaps more importantly, they are beginning to experience an idea we want every child to carry with them: I can have a say in how I learn.

A new chapter for education in Anekal begins.

We’re delighted to share that government stakeholders, CSOs, CSR organisations, teachers, schools, and community leaders working towards Anekal 2030 have come together to form the Anekal Block Education Committee.

And the committee came together for its first meeting. The purpose was simple: to work together, at the block level, towards better outcomes for every child in Anekal.

The first conversation brought school-level realities to the table — from teacher shortages and migration to learning outcomes, language development, career awareness and reaching children in interior schools.

Together, the committee shaped a shared Anekal 2030 vision: Every child in Anekal moves forward with confidence, learns in a joyful environment, and grows with the support of school, family and community.

Two priorities will shape the journey ahead:
→ Holistic development — communication, collaboration, creativity, critical thinking and social-emotional learning
→ Multilingual education — strengthening language development while nurturing Kannada alongside English

And this is just the beginning. The committee will now work together to identify 50 schools for targeted support, strengthen infrastructure in five schools, and come together every quarter to track progress.

One Block. Shared Vision. A future where every child can thrive.

The policy question: Can a near-zero-cost, teacher-led peer-learning routine accelerate foundational numeracy inside ordinary government classrooms?

At the XXI International Conference on Public Policy & Management, Centre for Public Policy, IIM Bangalore, Anna Daniel and Pragya Yadav presented “Learning with Peers: Scaling a Teacher-Led Peer Tutoring Programme in Rural Bihar” under the Practitioner: Education & Foundational Learning track.

Framed around “From Policy to Practice: Scaling Peer Pedagogy in Government Schools,” the presentation drew on evidence from a cluster RCT across 177 government schools in Bhagalpur, covering Grades 3–5. The model was implemented through existing teachers and students, rather than external tutors.

The findings:
→ Maths scores improved by 11.6 percentage points in peer-learning schools, compared with 7.2 points in control schools, an additional 4.4 percentage-point gain (+0.16 SD).
→ Students reported greater ease of studying (+0.11 SD).
→ Students also reported lower anxiety around learning with peers (–0.10 SD).

The conversation reinforced an important question for education policy: how can we make solutions not only effective, but simple enough to work within the everyday realities of government classrooms?

What does a 2030 vision look like when it begins at the school level?

As part of the Lighthouse Schools Project, students, teachers, parents, alumni, Head Masters and School Development and Management Committees came together across our five schools to imagine what their schools could become.

Those conversations have now shaped draft visions for all five schools.

But the process isn’t over.

Next, student parliaments will ask: **Does this vision truly represent the school we want to build? What’s missing? What would we change?**

Because a vision becomes meaningful when children can see themselves in it, shape it, and take ownership of it.

This is what age-appropriate agency can look like in practice.

We are honoured to be recognised at the 𝗧𝗢𝗜 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁 under the Education category, recognising the work and impact of our peer teaching programme.

At the heart of this work is a simple belief: every child can lead. A student who once sat quietly in a classroom can become the one helping a younger student read, understand a difficult concept, or simply believe, “I can do this.” In these everyday moments of students teaching one another, we see confidence grow, leadership take root, and classrooms begin to change from within.

This recognition is a celebration of the students who lead, the teachers who enable them, and the school communities that make this change possible.

Here’s to creating classrooms where every child has the opportunity to learn, lead and help others learn. ❤️

"What would it take to make Anekal a Model Block of Global Excellence in Education by 2030?"

This was the question at the heart of the Anekal Education Collective’s CSR Roundtable, co-convened by Involve & Mantra4Change

The roundtable brought together perspectives from government, CSR, civil society and academia - to move from individual efforts towards a shared vision for Anekal’s education ecosystem.

The conversation explored what a thriving education block should look like:

→ Government schools with infrastructure that builds trust among families
→ Teachers who are present, supported and empowered to teach
→ Children who are joyful, confident, capable and able to shape their futures
→ Stronger parent–school partnerships
→ Better ways to track learning, retention, attendance, infrastructure and student development

But the larger question was not simply what needs to change?
It was how do we make change collective, measurable and sustainable?

We discussed the need for shared indicators, better coordination across organisations, stronger government–CSR–CSO collaboration, and a common view of progress across the block.

Some of the next steps emerging from the roundtable include:
• A shared 2030 Vision for Anekal
• A collective education dashboard to strengthen data-informed action
• An Education Committee bringing together government, students, CSR and civil society
• Block-level initiatives aligned with government priorities and measurable outcomes
• Identifying and developing a model school that can eventually be replicate
• Greater collaboration on career guidance and future pathways for students

The ambition is bigger than any one organisation. Because a model education block cannot be built through parallel efforts. It requires a shared vision, common measures, sustained collaboration and collective ownership.

This is the work of the Anekal Education Collective — bringing together the ecosystem to imagine, align and act towards a common future for every child in the block.

Last month marked an important milestone in Involve's journey.

We are so happy & proud to share the signing of an MoU with the Education Department, Government of Bihar, marking the beginning of a state-level partnership to strengthen teaching and learning across government schools.

Over the years, our journey in Bihar has grown steadily—from working with schools, to partnering with districts, and now to collaborating with the State. It has been built through trust, continuous learning, and the collective efforts of educators, government officials, and partners who believe that meaningful change happens when we work together.

Beginning with our work in Bhagalpur and Banka, and now expanding to Vaishali, this partnership represents an opportunity to deepen our learning and strengthen Bihar's vision for high-quality, student-centred education.

At Involve, we believe that lasting educational transformation is built through strong partnerships, shared ownership, and systems that enable every child to participate, lead, and thrive.

We are grateful to the Education Department, Government of Bihar, and everyone who has contributed to making this partnership possible.
