🌟 CCVC words follow the letter sequence Consonant-Consonant-Vowel-Consonant. CVCC words, however, follow the letter sequence Consonant-Vowel-Consonant-Consonant.

🌟 CCVC words include: ‘s-t-o-p', 'f-l-i-p' and 'p-l-a-n'. Each of the 4 sounds don't have to be made by one letter, they can also be digraphs and trigraphs. For example, 't-r-a-ck', 'th-r-i-ll', 's-c-ar-f' and 'sh-r-e-d'.

🌟CVCC words include: ‘p-i-n-k', 'm-u-s-t' and 'h-e-l-p'. Each of the 4 sounds don't have to be made by just one letter, they can also be digraphs and trigraphs. For example, 'b-e-n-ch', 'l-ea-n-t', p-oi-n-t and 'ch-o-m-p'.

🌟CCVC and CVCC words are learnt in phase 4 of the Letters and Sounds phonics curriculum.

🌟In phase 4, children also learn longer words with more consonant sounds than this, such as CCCVC words (e.g. 's-p-l-a-sh'), CCVCC words (e.g. 'c-r-u-s-t') and CCCVCC words (e.g. 's-c-r-u-n-ch').

You can help children learn to write these words by asking them to 'sound out' the word. By breaking it down into the individual sounds, then writing each one in turn they will find it easier to write the whole word. Children should practise these skills regularly in their daily phonics session.

Most importantly, foster a love of reading by keeping it a fun activity. It's important to follow the child's lead— we don't want to force our child to read. Similarly reading time should not be a punishment for kids. A big part of shared book reading is developing children's interest in books, and using them as a punishment is counter-productive. It's not just about quantity: It's about sharing a special learning experience that's enjoyable and comfortable for both parent and child.
