Our patient testimonial

.OT DAY.

I had my first exposure to the operation theatre just a couple of days back.

Right now, I am in my internship, and we have clinical postings mandatory in our college.

So, I’m now posted in the dept of orthodontics and I got an opportunity of visiting the operation theatre with my senior professor.

It was 10 in the morning when I was called to witness a maxillary distraction Surgery for a cleft patient. My excitement was at the peak!!!

As soon as we went there, we were given those scrubs, face masks, etc. It was totally different “A typical- Doctor Doctor feeling” while doing that. Finally we went inside the operation theatre and there what I saw…. Grabbed my attention, Raised my heart rate and caused bristling of hairs (Goosebumps).

A 15 year old girl was lying on the operation table covered with blue gown and mouth propped fully open ! :( There were beeps of monitor continuously monitoring her BP, pulse rate, heart rate, and body temperature etc. The surgery was to be performed by the Doctors under the guidance of a senior consultant. So, The doctors were preparing themselves for the procedure. At one side where I was feeling stunned and dumbfounded, the doctors were quite relaxed and easy.

The girl had restricted mouth opening and it was a difficult case. (Meanwhile thoughts like- ohh God! surgery is so complicated!!! ).

She was given spinal anaesthesia, which dampened her sensations for time being until the surgical procedure was complete.

I wondered how they handled the instrument with so much dexterity. Their faces were calm, their hands steady. it reminded me of that famous english saying "A good surgeon must have an eagle's eye, a lion's heart, a lady's hand."

That was a motivation pill for me because I also aspire to be a skilled surgeon some day!! :):):)

Huhh!! But that was not the end! Then came the most tedious task… Suturing!! This took the greatest part of time taken for the entire process. That has to be done perfectly. To close everything that was cut open along with ensuring that there was no source of internal bleeding left open after the skin was packed again.

And then the orthodontist part , my professor Dr. Shiva had the appliance ready in his hands . He took the glass ionomer cement , a spatula and mixed it in a very smooth way and I was there adding glass ionomer liquid in drops and I was very happy to be a part of it . The intraoral distraction osteogenesis device was cemented in the patient’s mouth to initiate anterior maxillary distraction. This successful surgery would have not been possible without the entire team especially the Anesthetist and the Ward sisters as they played a major role as the best helping hands.

At last, we came out of the OT where the attendants of that Little girl were waiting for the surgery to end . Their wide smile seeing our professor coming out of the operation theatre .!!

Even I was very happy to see their happy faces! :)

I took some mandatory pic to share my first OT experience

Overall… there was Enthusiasm, Thrill, Fear, and Happiness and of course so much to learn !!!

Thank you:)
