PETA’s Person of the Year: Dr Shashi Tharoor

The Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development, Dr. Shashi Tharoor named as the Person of the Year by the animal rights body PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) – India for taking steps to advance animal protection. Mr. Tharoor recommended the National Council for Teacher Education (NCERT) to ban the use of animals, viz. for dissection, etc, in training teachers.

By his initiative, in 2012, the Ministry of Environment and Forests issued a directive instructing all the institutes or establishments associated with teaching of medical, pharmacy and other courses in life sciences to follow UGC guidelines for discontinuation of dissection and animal experimentation in universities and colleges and introduce use of alternatives to animal experimentation.
About People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) - India
Based in Mumbai, launched in January 2000.
Operates under the simple principle that animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on or use for entertainment.
Focuses primarily on the areas in which the greatest numbers of animals suffer the most: in the food and leather industries, laboratories and the entertainment industry.
Responsible for the ending of animal experiments by the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education in 2008.

Indian Idol winner Sandeep Acharya passes away

Sandeep Acharya, who won the second season of Indian Idol in 2006, passed away at a Gurgaon hospital on Sunday.

The 29-year-old singer, who hailed from Rajasthan, had been suffering from jaundice for a fortnight. However, he apparently neglected his health and had to be admitted to a local hospital in his hometown, Bikaner, in a critical condition.

When his health did not improve, he was taken to Gurgaon. He breathed his last on Sunday at 9am.

His younger brother, Akshay, said on Sunday, "Last night, doctors said his condition was under control and he was showing signs of recovery. We were all hoping we'd soon take him home. But nobody knew that he would leave us forever."

Acharya is survived by his wife and a one-month-old daughter. His last rites will be performed in Bikaner.

SRI LANKA PRESIDENT MAHINDA RAJAPAKSA INAUGURATED THE COMMONWEALTH BUSINESS FORUM 2013

The Commonwealth Business Forum has inaugurated by president Mahinda Rajapaksha at Cinnamon Grand Hotel in Colombo with the participation of around 1500 delegates from Commonwealth Countries including key businessmen and head of states. KANDIVALI GROUND RENAMED AS SACHIN TENDULKAR GYMKHANA CLUB BY MCA

The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) renamed the Kandivali ground as the Sachin Tendulkar Gymkhana Club. Sachin Tendulkar, in the meanwhile, explained that MCA was one of the best platforms for the next generation for learning cricket with right coaching and facilities. In the meanwhile, the MCA also formally renamed the Kandivali ground as the Sachin Tendulkar Gymkhana Club. The first Test of the India-West Indies series is to be played from November 6-10 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata while the second and final game, which would also mark the end of Tendulkar’s glittering career, will be held at the Wankhede Stadium from November 14-18.
