The Ping Pong Ball Experiment
Lewin’s most famous demonstration of this principle involves a ping pong ball and a funnel.
The "Magic" Trick: He places a ping pong ball inside a funnel and tries to blow it out by blowing hard through the narrow end. Instead of being pushed out, the ball is sucked deeper into the funnel.
The Physics: As air is blown through the narrow neck, it must move much faster to pass through the tight space between the ball and the funnel wall. This high-speed air creates a region of low pressure around the ball. The higher atmospheric pressure outside then pushes the ball into the funnel, counteracting gravity.
Upside-Down Test: To prove it isn't just gravity holding the ball, he flips the funnel upside down while blowing. If he blows hard enough, the ball remains suspended, "sucked" upward by the low-pressure zone created by the fast-moving air.

Professor Walter Lewin presents period of oscillation of a pendulum.
The time for one complete cycle, a left swing and a right swing, is called the period.
The period of a simple pendulum, the time for one full swing, is primarily determined by its length (L) and the acceleration due to gravity (g), following the formula T = 2π√(l/g), especially for small swing angles (amplitudes).
Mass and amplitude (for small angles) don’t affect the period, but the period increases with length and decreases with stronger gravity.
REMARKS:
- Longer pendulums have longer periods (swings take more time).
- Stronger gravity (like on Earth vs. the Moon) results in a shorter period (faster swing).
- The mass of the pendulum bob does not change the period.
- For small angles (around 15° or less), the size of the swing doesn’t significantly alter the period.

It focuses the parallel light rays to a single point called the principal focus after reflection. This property is used in applications like solar furnaces and car headlights to concentrate light. Convex Mirror: A convex mirror bulges outward, and is known as a diverging mirror. It causes the parallel light rays to spread out or diverge after reflection. The reflected rays appear to originate from a virtual focal point behind the mirror.
