The MOL Comfort, a 2008-built post-Panamax container ship owned by Mitsui OSK Lines, was one of the largest container ships of its time, measuring 316 meters in length with a beam of 45 meters. Built at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Nagasaki Shipyard in Japan, she was originally launched in March 2008 as APL Russia for American President Lines before being transferred to Mitsui OSK Lines in 2012 and renamed MOL Comfort.

On June 17, 2013, the vessel broke apart in bad weather approximately 200 nautical miles off the coast of Yemen while sailing from Singapore to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, carrying 4,382 containers. The incident began with a hull crack, leading to the ship splitting into two sections after hogging. The 26-member crew safely abandoned ship in life rafts and was rescued by a German vessel responding to the distress call.

Both sections of the ship remained afloat and were drifting northeast. A salvage operation was initiated with four oceangoing tugs from Smit Salvage Singapore attempting to tow the bow section. However, the stern section sank the following day. The bow section later caught fire and eventually sank on July 11, 2013.

The exact cause of the accident remains undetermined. Both sections sank in deep waters, making recovery efforts impossible. The incident raised concerns about structural integrity in modern container ships, leading to further investigations and reviews of shipbuilding practices.
