Grade 12 students bring “The Last Lesson” to life through art-integrated learning at Chitkara International School
Chitkara International School, Chandigarh, conducted an engaging art-integrated activity for the students of Grade 12 during their English Language class, centred on the chapter The Last Lesson by Alphonse Daudet. Moving beyond conventional classroom instruction, students immersed themselves in a compelling role play that brought history to life. The classroom was thoughtfully transformed into a 19th-century Alsatian schoolhouse, capturing the poignant final moments of linguistic freedom in 1870. Through the use of “Character Slips”, students assumed distinct roles, enabling them to experience the emotional depth and cultural significance associated with the loss of one’s mother tongue. This experiential enactment encouraged learners to critically engage with profound themes such as linguistic identity, cultural displacement, and the consequences of procrastination. The activity not only deepened textual understanding but also instilled a heightened appreciation for language, heritage, and education. The performance stood as a powerful reminder of the value of preserving one’s linguistic and cultural roots. The Grade 12 students deserve commendation for their sensitive, insightful, and evocative portrayal.
It also reflected the school’s commitment to creating meaningful learning experiences that extend beyond textbooks and leave a lasting intellectual and emotional impact.
