Within a kilometre of the world-famous Hoysaleshwar Temple is another exquisite Hoysala temple – the Kedareshwara Temple, Halibedu. The temple was constructed in 1219 CE by King Veera Ballala II and his Queen Ketaladevi, and its main deity is Maheshwara (another name for Shiva). The temple took nearly 80 years to complete!

The wall is intricately carved. There are sculptures of Hindu deities on the top while its lowest layers consist of bands with friezes that consist of (from bottom to top) elephants, horsemen, scrolls, lions, scrolls and floral designs, scenes from Hindu epics, ancient beasts (makara) and swans.,
the artists captured the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, and the main episodes of the Bhagavata.
The elephants symbolise stability and strength and are considered as the weight lifters of the temple.
Next come the horses which symbolise speed
while the lions above them are for courage.
There are panels with scrolls and floral designs signifying beauty, where as the swans symbolise fortune.
