First impressions on landing in Toronto

One normally lands at Pearson Airport in Toronto. It is a large clean airport and is some what similar to T3.

Checking out does not take much time. Staff is friendly and most are Indians only.

One can speak freely with them in Hindi and Punjabi.

One important difference you would notice is that people are always working. There is discipline in queues. One can ask as many questions and the person behind you won't bug.

Once outside the airport there are plentiful buses and taxis to take you to the city. The neighborhood has good cheap hotels. They can be booked in advance. They would cost $ 30-50 per day and can be shared by 2-3 persons.

If one lands in August / September, one will notice that the sun sets at 10 PM. So you will get a long day to put your affairs in order.

Carry some tea bags because the hotels will generally have coffee service. Drink water from the taps.

Another thing one notices is that everybody does one's own work. So you will have to pull your luggage. All large bags should have wheels for ease of movement.

People are polite and strangers would greet you if you make eye contact.

You will start loving it from the first day.

A choice of subjects is available

One great advantage of education abroad is that they have programs which educate children in almost all streams of trade.

They have programs for children who want to learn hair dressing.

They have programs which train people in selling cars.

They have programs which train people on how to organise exhibitions.

Secondly, the programs always in end some kind of certificate , diploma or a degree.

One can chose any program based on one's proficiency. Diploma in the subject will almost certainly result in a job.

We at Kiwi and Maple encourage children and their guardians to visit us and explore the options available.

A lot of times, kids are left wondering whether they are pursuing hobby or education. Such is the delight of education abroad.

Learning English

One of the biggest difficulties faced by children seeking admissions abroad is their discomfort in English.

It is to be expected as English is not our mother tongue. But the advantage is that all Indians are exposed to some degree of English.

While reading skills are fine with most children, the problem comes in speaking and listening abilities.

Now what should one do.

1. The first step should be that the student should increase exposure to English media. There are a number of channels broadcasting English news and other programs. One should start with listening and watching Indian English news channels. Once the comprehension improves, one should shift to channels like BBC & CNN.

2. he second step is to start learning ordinary English words. A lot of good books are available in the market. A student should keep a target of learning 10 words every day. A list of 1000 words would be quite sufficient for boosting confidence.

3. Always keep in mind that the student will have to understand and talk to people whose mother tongue is English. So exposure should be focused on content from the target Countries.

It makes good sense to take one preliminary IELTS exam. This would create an assessment of the existing abilities and help a teacher in deciding effort required to improve the scores.

First steps for Education abroad

A student and his / her parents have to take decision in class 10 only whether the child has to study and settle abroad. It takes time to plan.

Colleges / Universities at Canada, Australia and New Zealand offer great career oriented programs which end in diplomas or degrees.

These Countries as a matter routine accept immigrants also.
Education in their Countries improves the prospects of immigration.

If the child decides what to study abroad in advance, it really helps. Details of programs offered are available on College websites. Some of the skilled agencies provide up to date information on Colleges also.

Generally a child has to show proficiency in English. This is the main hindrance in getting admission as well as Visa.

In support of Education Abroad

One sad reality for children in our Northern Indian States is that there are not many employment opportunities despite undergoing backbreaking programs at local colleges.

Getting admission in prominent colleges is impossible. One really has to be smarter than Einstein to get admission in IITs.

The curriculum too is not good enough to provide immediate employment. Students have to train further.
Local polytechnics provide job oriented training but the job prospects are poor.

The first step for a student to choose education abroad is to realize this fact.
