Established in 2001, the department offers Master.s course in Defence & Strategic Studies including research degree programmes. The admission in Master course is open to all the students from various streams but, preference is to the applicants who have studied Defence Studies/Military Science at graduation level. 5 seats are reserved for the serving defence personnel.

The department also offer M.Phil. course in Defence & Strategic Studies to the defence service officers posted at HQ Army Training command (ARTRAC), Shimla including its 29 training establishments .5 seats are also kept for armed forces outside ARTRAC. 5 seats are kept open for admission through entrance test conducted by the university.

Radhika Pasrija, a postgraduate student of the School of Communication Studies (SCS), Panjab University, has been selected to represent Asia for the fifth World Journalism Education Congress, to be held in Paris from July 9 to July 11.
Of 170 projects received from the journalism students from across the world, Radhika Pasrija’s paper has been selected for presentation. A total of five journalism students from different continents have been selected to attend the conference. Students will be presenting papers and ideas about the future of journalism education.

Existential crisis is not just a millennial term; it is deep rooted in every section of society and makes for an interesting conversation. Recently, School of Communication Studies, Panjab University, conducted a Panel Discussion on ‘Crisis In Media: An Existential Conundrum ’, in collaboration with the ICSSR-NWRC , where Mukesh Kharbanda, MD, Fuzion PR Pvt. Ltd., was one of the panelists and talked at length on the existential crisis that the communication and media industry is facing. The discussion also saw other media personalities like Jyoti Kamal, Chief of Bureau - Chandigarh, CNN IBN, Manu Moudgil,Independent Journalist, Multimedia expert and Environmentalist along with two professors Manoj Dayal and at Guru Jambheshwar University and Panjab University respectively, put across their thoughts on the topic.
