Ludhiana: Raising their voice against promotion of private publishers by CBSE schools, Parents' Association of Ludhiana, which comprises parents of students from different schools, submitted a memorandum to deputy commissioner Rajat Agarwal and district education officer (secondary) Paramjit Kaur Chahal on Tuesday.
In their meeting, they alleged that city schools affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) promote private publishers over NCERT books in clear violation of affiliation bylaws. CBSE has asked all schools to use NCERT books for all classes and as far as books of private publishers are concerned, schools can use them as reference books only.
Association president Rajinder Ghai said, "CBSE schools are violating rules by promoting private publishers. Moreover, books recommended by them are available only on certain shops, the unavailability increasing the price. Today, we have approached DC and DEO to ensure the implementation of rules in CBSE schools."
A book dealer said, "If schools recommend NCERT books for all classes, price of a set of books will start at Rs 300 for class 1 and will go up to Rs 900 for class 12. However, now when schools include only three to four NCERT books and rest of the recommended books are by private publishers, price of a book set for nursery class starts at Rs 2,500 and the cost reaches around Rs 45,000 for class 12."
Ghai shared, "If we compare market price of both NCERT books and private publishers, the huge difference is clearly visible. Cost of NCERT books starts at Rs 40 and maximum price for any subject and any class is around Rs 80. However, cost of a book by a private publisher starts at Rs 200."
R J Khanderao, regional head of CBSE, said the board has only permitted use of NCERT books for all classes. "Schools can recommend private publishers, but as reference books. These guidelines are under affiliation bylaws. Schools have to use and promote NCERT books in schools," he reiterated.
DC and DEO assured parents of forwarding their complaint to the CBSE as only the board can take action against schools. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/ludhiana/Parents-come-up-against-schools-promoting-private-publishers/articleshow/50464063.cms
