Field Visit to National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI) at Karnal, Haryana and Pipli Zoo under PM Usha Scheme
On January 31, 2025, the Department of Zoology of GGDSD College organized a Field Visit to the Pipli Zoo and National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI) at Karnal, Haryana an Imperial Institute for Animal Husbandry & Dairying under PM- USHA scheme. The visit was attended by 50 students of B. Sc under supervision of Dr. Indu Mehta accompanied by Dr. Sonika Kapoor and Mr. Sukhwinder Singh.
This field visit to NDRI Karnal, provided a valuable opportunity for the members to actively engage in discussions about the different labs and the working procedures within them. Through these interactions, they were able to gain a deeper understanding of the technologies and methodologies used in the dairy industry. The discussions were not only educational but also fostered critical thinking, allowing the members to better grasp the practical applications of the concepts they had learned. This exposure helped to bridge the gap between theory and practice, making the experience both enriching and insightful.
The event began with an insightful introduction to the functioning of the dairy industry, emphasizing its crucial role in providing research and development support to enhance milk production. The session highlighted the importance of R&D in developing innovative practices that ensure sustainable and high-quality milk production, thereby benefiting both the industry and society at large. Students were educated on the increased demand of the dairy products, its management practices, and the far-reaching benefits to the society., the economy, and the environment. Additionally, the session highlighted its contribution to manpower development programs.
The field visit was supplemented with nature’s embrace with Pipli Zoo which is black buck breeding centre also having a cluster of wild life including Asiatic lion, Blackbuck, Hanuman langur, Chital (spotted deer), Indian leopard, Hyena etc. The enthusiasm of students for learning lead to the overall success of the visit. The field visit proved to be an inspiring experience for their academic and professional growth.
The field visit to NDRI was concluded with valuable insights gained through detailed explanations by the lab professors at NDRI. A heartfelt thank is extended to the Principal of GGDSD College Dr. Ajay Sharma for giving this opportunity to the students.

Invited lecture under PM-USHA scheme

Department of Zoology, Goswami Ganesh Dutta Sanatan Dharma College, Sector-32, Chandigarh organized an Invited lecture on 24th January, 2025 under PM-USHA scheme. Dr. Yogesh Kumar Rawal, Professor, Zoology Department, Panjab University Chandigarh delivered a lecture on the topic “Introductions of Exotics: Are we moving towards sustainable aquaculture”. The talk was about the affect of introduction of foreign species in new environment which causes irreversible impact on the endemic fauna and the ecosystems by giving example of Snow trout and Brown trout. The speaker focused on the problems associated with the exotic species and to promote the cultivation of native species. The talk was organized in association with IIC of the college where students were made aware of the startup in the field of sustainable aquaculture.
The lecture was followed by an interactive session and various career options in the field of fisheries were also discussed with the students. The whole event was quite engaging and concluded by the vote of thanks by the Head of the Department, Dr. Indu Mehta. Principal Dr. Ajay Sharma talked about importance of such lectures and emphasized on conducting such enlightening talks which are very important in shaping the career of students. The talk was attended by B.Sc students and ended on happy note.

Department of Zoology organized an educational tour to visit Govt museum and art gallery, Sector 10, Chandigarh to show them about human evolution and fossilization on 01, March, 2024. Around 42 students went to see the science museum. The students were accompanied by Dr. Jyoti Joshi and Dr. Preeti Kalia. It was a fun learning experience as the students came to know about Evolution of Modern man from its various ancestors, the period of Dinosaurs and some real fossils depicting the life of past. Overall the trip was enjoyable.

4th Counselling and Mentoring session

Department of Zoology, Goswami Ganesh Dutta Sanatan Dharma College, Sector-32, Chandigarh organized “4th Counselling and Mentoring Interactive Session” on 10.02.2024. The objective of the event was to mentor and counsel the students regarding various career options.
Dr. Vipnesh Bhardwaj (Ex HOD, History Department, GGDSD College) was the guest of honor of the event. He very kindly gifted his collection of fossils which he collected from Shivalik foothills. The fossils will be kept in Zoology museum and will be acting as wonderful study material for under graduate students as they have this topic in their curriculum. He told the students regarding his journey, hardships and contentment he experienced while collecting fossils. He encouraged the students and threw light on various careers in Paleontology and Anthropology.
The mentors for the Counseling and Mentoring session were Dr. Nancy Garg (Asst. Prof. Govt. PGWC), Dr. Aayushi Kundu (SRF, TIET Patiala), Ms. Aarushi Jaswal (Inspector Cooperative Societies, Dept. of Cop., Govt. of Punjab), Ms. Navpreet Kaur (Quality Inspector, FCI), Mr. Amit Sihmar (Director, Sihmar Classes) who are ex students of GGDSD College and are well established professionals. They shared their extensive experiences, motivated the students and guided them regarding the diverse career options after graduation.
The students enthusiastically participated in this interactive session and made the best use of this opportunity by clearing their doubts and got to know copious career options for their future. The winners of Quiz, Photography and Slogan writing competitions which were conducted by Zoology department earlier during the current academic session were also felicitated. Dr. Indu Mehta, HOD, delivered a vote of thanks. The conversation and mentoring session was very fruitful. The suggestions and insights given by the speaker will be well utilized by the students in selecting their career. Principal Dr. Ajay Sharma appreciated the efforts of the department and encouraged to conduct more such events for students in the future.

Aristotle Club of the Department of Zoology, in collaboration with Green campus committee, Goswami Ganesh Dutta Sanatan Dharam College, Chandigarh organized a photography Competition on the eve of World Wildlife week on 06.10.23 to create awareness among the students for the beautiful flora and fauna around them. It was an enriching experience for the student to look around their wild life in their natural habitats and understand their importance of conservation. Around 45 students participated in the event enthusiastically.

Aristotle Club of Zoology Department along with Green Campus Committee, Goswami Ganesh Dutta Sanatan Dharma College, Chandigarh organized the “Slogan Writing Competition” on 4.10.2023 to celebrate “National Wildlife Week on the theme ‘Wildlife and Environment Conservation’. 47 students participated in the event enthusiastically. This platform provided students to explore their potential. The students in their slogans highlighted the importance of healthy environment, greenery and importance of wildlife which needs its conservation. The winners were facilitated with trophies.
Principal Dr. Ajay Sharma congratulated the students for their active participation. He was happy to see that students have come up with such innovative slogans. Dr. Indu Mehta, HOD, also appreciated their creativity. The event concluded with the happy note.

DEPARTMENT OF ZOOLOGY

The Department of Zoology, GGDSD College organized a Quiz Competition for
B.Sc. Medical students on 23 rd August, 2023. The quiz was comprising of many
rounds like testing the visual ability, Odd One out, identifying the Scientist and Rapid
fire round. All the participants participated enthusiastically. Saumya, Nikita and
Kartik of ‘Team A ’ bagged first position. Principal Dr. Ajay Sharma congratulated
the participants for winning the tough competition. On this event Dr. Indu Mehta,
Head of Zoology gave vote of thanks and motivated them. The event concluded with
a happy note.

Aristotle Club of Zoology Department, Goswami Ganesh Dutta Sanatan Dharma College, Sector-32, Chandigarh organized “Just A Minute” (JAM) Contest on Road Safety followed by G-20 Presidency Awareness talk on 22.02.2023. One faculty member made students aware of G-20 Presidency and its aim. As the Group of Twenty (G20) is a premium forum which plays an important role in strengthening and shaping global architecture, wherein the youth of the nation plays a major role.
In Just A Minute contest, 13 students of different classes of B.Sc. participated in the event. The students participated enthusiastically and made the best use of platform to coin their views. The event was appreciated and judged by Mrs. Seema Kumari, Head of the Political Sciences Department and Dr. Jyoti Joshi. Dr. Indu Mehta, HOD, encouraged the participants for their anticipation and delivered a vote of thanks to conclude the event. Saumya (B.Sc.II), Tanvi (B.Sc. III), Mohita (BScII) and Leepakshi (BScII) was adjudged first, second, third and consolation respectively. Principal Dr Ajay Sharma congratulated the winners and appreciated the efforts of the students. The event concluded with a happy note.

G20 the premier forum for international economic cooperation plays an important role in shaping and strengthening global architecture and governance on all major international economic issues. “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” or “One Earth, One Family, One Future” is India’s G20 theme, Aristotle Club of Zoology Department, Goswami Ganesh Dutta Sanatan Dharma College, Chandigarh organized the “Innovative Slogan Writing Competition” on 25.01.2023 as a contribution to “India’s G20 Summit”.
17 students participated in the event enthusiastically. Principal Dr. Ajay Sharma Congratulated the participants for their efforts. He was happy to see that students have come up with such innovative slogans. Dr. Indu Mehta, HOD, appreciated their creativity as they came up with such an innovative idea. This platform provided students to explore their potential. The participants were given refreshment as well. The winners will be facilitated in an upcoming event of the department in near future. The event ended with the happy note.

Precision or Personalized medicine is becoming a reality, thus thanks to the scientific advancements underlying these omics technologies that provide us with such approach. Department of Zoology, Goswami Ganesh Dutta Sanatan Dharma College, Chandigarh organized a National Seminar on 15th November, 2022 in which Dr. Indu Verma, Professor, Department of Biochemistry, PGIMER, Chandigarh, delivered a talk on the topic “Biomarker Discovery in the OMICS era”.
In her lecture, Dr. Indu Verma explained about the OMICS technology how it works, and its role in the fast discovery of relevant biomarkers. She described the role of OMICS in providing the tools for a better understanding of various human diseases including cancers, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, etc and the development of new drugs according to patient disease susceptibility, diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment response. The session was very significant, informative, interactive and useful. Students asked lots of questions enthusiastically.
After the talk winners of the Slogan Writing Competition and Just A Minute (JAM) competition which was organized by the department on 16.09.2022 and 04.10.2022, respectively were also awarded. Aristotle club volunteers were also given certificates for their involvement in various activities of the Aristotle club.
The principal of the college Dr. Ajay Sharma welcomed the speaker and encourage the department for conducting such talks in future as well as our guiding lights for the students to choose their career in research. A vote of thanks was given by Dr. Indu Mehta. She encouraged the club volunteers to participate and get more exposure. The event ended with the happy note.

Department of Zoology, Goswami Ganesh Dutta Sanatan Dharma College, Chandigarh has organized a one-day educational visit to “National Dairy Research Institute” Karnal on 11th November 2022. A visit to NDRI was worth the experience as learning with fun. The National Dairy Research Institute as the country's premier Dairy Research institution has developed considerable expertise over the last five decades in different areas of Dairy Production, Processing, Management and Human Resource Development. During the visit, Dr. Rajesh of NDRI explained about the various sections of the research institute.
The purpose of the visit was to acquaint students with basic and applied research techniques. A group of 46 students of B.Sc. IInd and B.Sc. IIIrd year joined the visit and were accompanied by Dr. Preeti Kalia, Dr. Parul Dhar and Mr. Sukhwinder Singh.. The interaction of students with staff was very lively. Then the students also visited Pipli Zoo in District Karnal, which is prominent zoo of that region. Students got exposure to wild life, where many species of Reptiles, Aves and Mammals were there.
Dr Ajay Sharma, Principal of the college encouraged the faculty to conduct more of such visits for the career benefit of the students. Dr Indu Mehta, Head of Zoology Department was happy to note that students made best use of this opportunity and also learn about the various career options in Dairy and Animal Husbandry field.

The ozone layer is pivotal for life on Earth and we must need to preserve this for future generations. Ozone layer is depleting over certain regions of Earth so to make students aware of the protection of Ozone layer, Aristotle Club of Zoology Department, Goswami Ganesh Dutta Sanatan Dharma College, Chandigarh organized the “Slogan Writing Competition” on 16.09.2022 to celebrate “World Ozone Day”. 44 students participated in the event enthusiastically. Winners will be awarded certificates. Dr. Indu Mehta, HOD, encouraged the participants and appreciated their creativity. Principal Dr. Ajay Sharma Congratulated the participants for their efforts. He was happy to see that students have come up with such innovative slogans. He said that such kind of awareness amongst the young generation is the need of the hour.
