Fed up of trying to explain how this trip will be more educational than a lifetime of spelling and maths tests?
When we decided to set up the School of Adventure the concept was simple: Kids want to have fun, they have a natural instinct to explore and make friends; Mum and Dad want some time for themselves and each other; schools back home want to be reassured that children are really learning and not just hanging on out on a beach or whatever; and everyone would like to get to know India a bit better, and to go home with more to remember the trip by than just a sun-tan and some sand between their toes.
Each week, at the School of Adventure, we follow a different theme based around something to do with India and Goa. So that might be Indian Gods, or Jungle Living, or Life on the Sea… you get the idea.
We’re a very practical kind of school though, so kids learn through doing and taking part in group activities, rather than in a classroom, so instead of book learning they go on trips and excursions, they play games, they make, and they do.
Basically they have fun, but while they’re busy having fun, they’re also learning something about India.
And all of this happens under the watchful eye of our trained and professional staff.
At the end of each week they get a certificate of achievement, which lists what they have learned, from mastering basic Hindi, to making chapatis, to cooking on a campfire or making maps… and there is a record of what they have done in the shape of pictures, videos, and their various art and craft work. In this way the children can look back on their trip and remember the adventure they had, and they can even show grandma or uncle or neighbour and classmates and teacher what they did.
And Mum and Dad? Well Mum and Dad can just smile sweetly, a little gleam of told you so in their eyes… and yes, all right, a tan on their skin and sand between their toes!
