Pandita Ramabai was an Indian social reformer, a champion for the emancipation of women, and a pioneer in education. She was the first to promote the welfare and education of Indian widows. She played a significant role in making India a more progressive and forward-looking country and fought against several social evils such as Sati, widow remarriage, child marriage etc. She founded the Arya Mahila Sabha, the very first Indian feminist organization, to serve the cause of women. She pleaded for improvement in the educational syllabus of Indian women before the English Education Commission. This was referred to Queen Victoria and as a result of this, a movement for medical education for women was launched in Lady Dufferin College. Later on, she founded many organizations including; ‘Ramabai Association’, which accepted to pay the expenses for ten years to run a Widow’s Home; Mukti Mission; Krupa Sadan (home of grace for the disgraced women); Priti Sadan (home of love for the aged and infirm); Sadanand Sadan (home for boys); and Bartimi Sadan (home for the blind). Through her vision, many need groups have found new hope and are provided with housing, education, vocational training and medical services.
