Architecture for Safer Cities – Alumni Collaborative Workshop
The School of Architecture and Planning, KIIT University conducted an engaging workshop titled “Architecture for Safer Cities: Rethinking Public Spaces through Inclusive Design”, led by Ar. Parthiba Chakraborty (Asst. Professor, KSAP) in collaboration with alumnus Ar. Swagat Maniyala.

Set within the thoughtfully planned and vibrant KIIT campus, the workshop transformed familiar spaces into live learning laboratories. Through hands-on exercises and spatial mapping, students critically observed and analysed campus environments from the perspectives of diverse users—women, children, the elderly, and persons with varying mobility needs.

The session highlighted how even within a well-designed campus, everyday spaces such as pathways, edges, and transition zones play a crucial role in shaping safety, accessibility, and inclusivity. Students identified subtle design gaps while also appreciating the campus’s strengths in fostering a responsive and people-centric environment.

With active participation from students across different architecture institutions in the city, the workshop became a collaborative platform for fresh ideas, reinforcing the importance of inclusive design in shaping safer cities.
We extend our sincere thanks to Ar. Swagat Maniyala for contributing to this enriching alumni-led learning experience.

Architecture that cares, even when cure is no longer possible.

We had the pleasure to explore the Bagchi Karunashraya Palliative Care Center by Mindspace in Bhubaneswar.which is not just a healthcare facility—it is an “Abode of Compassion.” Rooted in the philosophy “Where there is no cure, there is care,” the project redefines how architecture can support dignity, empathy, and peace at the most vulnerable stages of life.

Spread across a serene campus, the design dissolves the boundaries between built and natural environments. Landscaped courtyards, gentle pathways, and open-to-sky spaces allow nature to become an active participant in healing, where architecture quietly recedes and human experience takes center stage.
Every space—from patient wards to circulation corridors—is envisioned to reduce anxiety, foster connection, and restore a sense of calm, emphasizing light, ventilation, and visual continuity with the outdoors. It is a place where architecture is not about monumentality, but about care, comfort, and emotional wellbeing.
A powerful reminder that the role of design goes beyond function—
it can hold space for humanity, dignity, and compassion.

The Bagchi Karunashraya Palliative Care Center by Mindspace in Bhubaneswar beautifully embodies the idea that when cure is not possible, care takes precedence. Through courtyards, soft transitions, and a seamless connection with nature, the design creates a calm, dignified, and deeply humane environment.

Today, our 2nd year students explored the space and were truly in awe of its sensitive planning, thoughtful design, and the powerful ideas it carries.
