"Reading With Your Child:

Is it Part of Your Bedtime Routine?"
Most of us are used to witnessing our children falling asleep on the living room couch while watching TV. The practice of reading bedtime stories to your child, which before technology and gadgets took over our lives, was the traditional way of indicating to children that they should be shutting shop for the day and get some much needed rest.

The art of bedtime story reading seemed all but a lost cause, given the hectic pace of modern life and the resulting lack of time.

Loving Guidance Helps Dinner Struggles!

Mom and dad have a challenge. Six year old Mona doesn’t stay at the table until she’s done eating. After the class on loving guidance, Mom decided to try it.

When Mona got up during dinner, mom silently walked over, rubbed her back and smiled, glancing back towards the dinner table. Mom was surprised that it worked! Mona came back willingly to the table, without Mom having to say a word!

Mom and Dad tried the same thing at bedtime. When Mona started playing instead of getting ready for bed, they would rub her back and look her in the eye with a smile. As soon as she made eye contact with Mom or Dad, she would go willingly to her bed.

Mom thinks a combination of things have improved Mona’s behavior. Using prevention by giving her lots of attention and encouragement when she does what she is supposed to do, and not over reacting when she misbehaves have both worked well towards a calmer home. Great job Mom & Dad!

Parenting Forgetful Behavior:

“Dad, where’s my backpack?”

“A child who always forgets has a parent who always remembers!”

Think of something that you are doing for your child that she could be doing for herself. Give this to your child as a new responsibility. In this way, you build her self-esteem and are teaching self-reliance.

Positive parenting – active parenting – begins way before a child is born. While the pregnancy period is a good time to put together a parenting plan with your spouse, some of this should have already been discussed before conception.

Active parenting and parenting with a positive outcome in mind requires effort–from before birth. But the rewards can be so well worth it.

Learn From Your Child:

Most adults assume that as soon as a child is born, it is time to become teachers. When a child enters your house, it is not the time to become a teacher, it is time to learn, because if you look at yourself and your child, your child is more joyous, isn’t it? So it is time you learn life from them, not the other way around.

The only thing that you can teach your child – which you have to, to some extent – is how to survive. But when it comes to life itself, a child knows more about life experientially, by himself. He is life; he knows it. Even with you, if you take away the influences you have imposed upon your mind, your life energies know how to be. It is only your mind which doesn’t know how to be. An adult is capable of all kinds of sufferings – imagined sufferings. A child has still not gone to that. So it is time to learn, not teach.

Just Let Him Be:

If parents are truly concerned about their children, they must raise their children in such a way that the child will never have any need for the parent. The process of loving should always be a liberating process, not an entangling process. So when the child is born, allow the child to look around, spend time with nature and spend time with himself.

Create an atmosphere of love and support and don’t try to impose your morals, ideas, religion or whatever in any way. Just allow him to grow, allow his intelligence to grow and help him look at life on his own terms, as a human being – not identified with the family, or your wealth or whatever else. Just helping him to look at life as a human being is very essential for his wellbeing and the wellbeing of the world.
