The department endeavours to develop proffessional HR managers for the corporate sectors and public systems, through its two-year regular management programme, MASTER IN PERSONNEL MANAGEMENT & INDUSTRIAL RELATION (M.P.M.I.R.) It has taken its birth in the year 1970 as the Department of Sociology and Labour Welfare and took its rebirth as an independent department that is Dept of Labour Welfare in
the year 1974. University-Industry Interaction:
The Department is a member of the Association of Management Development Institutions in South Asia (AMDISA), Indian Industrial Relations Associations, National Institute of Personnel Management and National HRD Network. The Board of Studies and Subject Research Committee, the two highest academic bodies in PM&IR, have members from allied disciplines and eminent personalities from different industries. The department closely interacts with industrial houses through regular class room seminars as well as State and National Level Workshops/seminars, MDPs, Consultancy, Summer Placement Programme, Project Work Assignments, guest faculty system and being member of professional bodies. Computer Facilities:
The Department has a well furnished Computer Lab with internet facility for the use of its students and teachers. Library Facilities:
(i) Besides the Parija Library which is the Central Library of the University, the Department has its own library with more than 3000 reference and text books for the use of faculty members and students. The Department also subscribes newspapers, periodicals and journals of national and international repute for the use of students and teachers. (ii) Reading Room: The Department has a well furnished reading room, used by the teachers & students with about 400 books for reference. Our Publications:
(i) Journal:
The Department publishes a bi-annual journal SAMRIDHI – The Journal for Human Resource Development containing research papers contributed by students, faculty members and experts from industries and management institutions. (ii) Wall Magazine:
The students bring out the Creative Wall Magazine GYANA ARK contributed by both students and teachers. The wall magazine is published fortnightly. (iii) Books:
Three books on “Employee Engagement”, “HRM- Issues & Challenges” and Corporate Leadership” have been published by the Department during 2011, 2012 and 2013 respectively. Hostel:

Seminars:
Seminars on various topics are held once in a week, mostly on each Saturday. Both students and faculty members participate in the seminar activities. Besides, experts are also invited from reputed institutes/universities/industrial houses to address the students. National Seminar:
Each year the Department organizes National Seminar on different topics of HR, IR, etc. This is actively participated by academicians, executives and students from various parts of the country. During May 11-12, 2013, the department organized an international seminar on “Corporate Leadership Issues & Challenges”. Professor Abhay Kumar Memorial Lecture:
From 2010, the department organizes Professor Abhay Kumar Memorial Lecture in the memory of Prof. Abhay Kumar the founder Professor the Department. The 3 Lectures organized, so far, were delivered by Prof. Thakur, Ex-Dean, Management Studies, Delhi University, Professor R. Mohanty, Vice Chancellor, SoA University and Prof. Balmohan Das, Ex-Vice Chancellor, Acharya Nagarjuna University in 2010, 2011 and 2012 respectively. On the occasion, each year the Department felicitates the achiever alumni and offers Prof Abhay Kumar Memorial Gold Medal to the first-class-first student of MPMIR. Industrial Tours:
Regular industrial tours are conducted in order to expose students to industrial arena and to earn firsthand knowledge in HR/IR practices by interacting with the corporate executives. Cultural Activities:
The Department is proud of its students who excel in dance, literature and other allied fields. Musical concerts, plays and other cultural programmes are organized by the students during the annual function, celebrated regularly. Inter-departmental competitions are held on debate, business quiz, etc. to promote creativity of students. Students participate in different B-school competitions and win prizes regularly. Picnic:
Each year the department organizes picnic as a part of socialization programme which is participated by all the students and teachers. Sports:
The department promotes professionalism among students who are District, University, State and National level players in various games namely; Cricket, Football, Table Tennis & Chess etc. The departmental cricket team is unique to bring excellence. Alumni Association:
The Alumni Association serves as a link between the department and its alumni. It has established close contact and interaction with the alumni of the department and facilitated exchange of ideas and experience to promote professionalism among students. We capitalize on our alumni and consider them as our assets. Curriculum:
With the increasing demand for HR professionals, the department administers a realistic course curriculum with regular modifications by experts. The two-year post graduate programme on Personnel Management & Industrial Relations, covers a detail curriculum in 4 semesters and the timing of semesters are as follows:
SEMESTER – I (July – December)
SEMESTER – II (January – June)
SEMESTER – III (July – December)
SEMESTER – IV (January – June)
From academic session 2013-14 Choice Based Credit System has been introduced. (The details of courses of study is given in Annexure-I)
Summer Training:
After completion of Semester-II, students undertake 6-8 weeks Summer Training Programme in Corporates and related service organizations. They are to submit a training report for valuation. Annual Project Work:
During Semester-IV, all the students are required to write Project Report on a topic relevant to HR&IR practices in corporate. The topic is decided in consultation with project guides, at the industry and in the department. Pedagogy:
To facilitate integrated learning in the department, different methods are followed to make it highly participative. The pedagogy includes lecture and discussions, case methods, seminars, self learning, industrial visits and individual/group presentations. Emphasis is laid on imparting leadership and interpersonal skill to the students. We promote HRD through participation and exposure. Attendance:
A minimum of 75 per cent attendance is essential for a student to be eligible for appearing at the University examination. Research:
Research has always been given top priority in the Department to improve teaching and to enhance knowledge. Research is undertaken in different areas of Management, viz, Behavioural Science, Human Resource Management, Industrial Relations, Labour Laws and Social Security, etc. Campus recruitment was done by Aditya Birla, Pradan, ARSS, etc during 2012-13.
