CAT 2016: While the exam will most likely take place in December this year, aspirants are already pulling up their socks and forming strategies to prepare.
cat 2016, CAT exam, mba entrance, mba success stories, 2015 cat toppers, common admission test, IIM, indian institutes of management, iim admission test, cat strategy, best strategy for cat, how to prepare for cat 2016 CAT 2016: While the exam will most likely take place in December this year, aspirants are already pulling up their socks and forming strategies to prepare.
The application form for the Common Entrance Test (CAT) 2016 for admission to MBA courses at the prestigious Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and other premier management institutes is already out. While the examination will most likely take place on December 4 this year, aspirants are already pulling up their socks and forming strategies to prepare.
Rajat Jain, who topped the CAT 2015 exam with a percentile of 100 and is currently studying at IIM Ahmedabad, suggests that two to three hours on weekdays and six to seven hours on weekends should be given to studying for CAT. “It is important to know where you stand at this point before you start preparing,” he said.
Another CAT topper, Sanuj Mittal, who also scored a percentile of 100, says that in order to give the paper your best, it is important to manage your time well and practise as many questions papers as possible. “Since I was an engineering student, Quantitative Aptitude was relatively easier for me,” said Sanuj, who started his preparation in January, almost 11 months before the exam.
According to Archita Mittal, an MBA aspirant set to take the exam this year, it is better to take subjects at a time rather than take everything at once. “It can be very confusing and monotonous if you study all subjects simultaneously. If you can take two subjects and study them together for a week or two then it can offer a refreshing change,” says Archita.
Coaching centres mushrooming across the country provide training to clear the CAT exam. Talking about whether coaching institutes are helpful, Archita said, “It depends on the percentile you are aiming for. You can clear the exam but external coaching helps you get the desired percentile by guiding you through strategy to maximize efficiency and utilize your time better.”
CAT 2016 exam pattern as revealed in the official CAT 2016 Mock Test released on October 25, is marked with certain changes and now the candidates are supposed to adopt the preparation strategy in accordance with the announced exam pattern for CAT 2016.
Quantitative Ability section in CAT 2016 will have 34 questions comprising 24 MCQs and 10 Non-MCQs. Quant section is more important as it is placed as the last and 3rd section in the CAT 2016 exam and you will arrive at this section after draining your energy in VARC and DILR sections and spending 2 hours of attempting the exam without break. This will need you to practice how to maintain your cool and not to miss on calculations. Accordingly, in view of the experts, you are supposed to practice the Quant questions more.
Offering the opportunity to solve the real type of CAT questions on Quant and to assess yourself where you stand on CAT 2016 preparation in Quant section, Prof Nish*t Sinha CAT expert, IIM Lucknow alumnus and author of titles on QA, LRDI and VARC, widely published by Pearson shares small Mock test comprising Quant questions.
CAT 2016 aspirants should honestly complete the Quant mock in not more than 18 minutes and only then they should cross check with answers how much they have scored.
Each correct answer carries 3 marks and each wrong answer carries the penalty of 1 mark negative marking. So before you arrive at your final score you should calculate and deduct the negative marks out of your credit marks.

Erudite wishes all CAT 16/17 aspirants a very Happy Diwali and brings you a flat waiver of Rs 10000 on CAT 17.Last date is 31st Oct.
CAT 2016 Admit card will be issued with a delay of 6 days. Now the admit card will be available for view and download from October 24 instead of October 18, 2016 as announced earlier by CAT Centre 2016.
Announcing the delay in issue of CAT 2016 Admit cards, IIM Bangalore shares “CAT 2016 Admit Cards can be downloaded from 01:00 PM on Monday October 24, 2016.” The displayed heading icons under important dates on CAT 2016 site also convey that Oct 24, 2016 is the date to download the CAT 2016 Admit card from 1 PM onwards instead of October 18.
The Admit Card was earlier proposed to be issued on October 18, 2016. In response to the query on CAT 2016 registration section in regard to issue of Admit Card, CAT Centre 2016 had replied “Admit card will be available for view and print from Tuesday, 18th October 2016, 1:00PM onwards. The Admit card will appear only if your online application form is submitted successfully.”
Now the date mentioned for issue of CAT 2016 admit card has been changed to ‘Monday October 24’. You will have to log onto the CAT website with your registered User ID. You will be eligible for an Admit Card only upon correct submission of online application form. CAT Centre 2016 has clarified ‘You will receive an automated email confirmation upon successful submission.’
Reasons for delay
The delay of 6 days in issuing the CAT 2016 Admit Card is caused due to two major reasons. Higher registrations with 2.32 lakh candidates and extension of registration date by 5 days have caused the delay in issue of CAT 2016 admit cards.
Number of registrations in CAT 2016 has gone up to 2.32 lakhs from 2.18 lakhs in CAT 2016. In order to cope with the rush CAT Centre 2016 requires few more days to finalise the issuance of CAT 2016 Admit Cards.
Another major reason in delay of issuing CAT 2016 admit card is the extension of 5 days from September 22 to September 27, 2016 in CAT 2016 registration process. Since more checks & balances are required to be placed before issuing the CAT 2016 Admit Cards to 2.32 lakh candidates, obviously unless everything is put right, the admit card cannot be issued.
10 days delay last year
In CAT 2015 the issue of Admit cards was also delayed by 10 days. It was earlier announced that CAT Admit cards would be available for view and print from October 15, 2015 onwards but a day before IIMs posted the message that the Admit Cards would be available to view and print on October 25, 2015 from 1 PM onwards.
CAT 2016 Admit Card: A mandatory document
According to CAT 2016 convening IIM Bangalore, “The Admit Card is a mandatory document required to take the exam. You must print the Admit Card and bring it to the exam centre on the day of the exam.”
Without Admit Card entry to test centre will not be permitted and an aspirant has to ensure to carry the print out of his CAT 2016 Admit Card with him
CMAT 2017: Exam dates announced; to be held in 2 days testing window
CMAT 2017 has released exam notification with increasing the testing window to 2 days from 1 day. Releasing the notification for CMAT January 2017, AICTE has informed that the Common Management Admission Test (CMAT) now a yearly test, will be conducted on two consecutive dates on January 28 and 29, 2017 as online CBT exam instead of single day exam of last year. The registration process for CMAT 2017 will begin on October 10, 2016. The last date to finalise the CMAT 2017 registration is December 10, 2016.
Unlike the last year notification, All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) the CMAT convening authority, has refrained from announcing the CMAT 2017 result declaration date as it might have created technical issues last year to declare the CMAT result within a week’s time from the date of conducting the exam.
CMAT 2017 will remain an online exam for admission to AICTE approved MBA/ PGDM courses 2017-19 batch across the country. It is expected that there could be structural and content based changes in CMAT 2017.
Since the CMAT 2017 will remain valid for admission to AICTE approved management programmes in the academic year 2017-18, the candidates who are planning to explore admission opportunity in MBA/PGDM programmes in 2017 need to register and apply for CMAT 2017.
2 days CMAT: January 28 & 29
Last year CMAT was conducted in a single day single session across the country. This year CMAT 2017 will be conducted in 2 days on January 28 & 29, 2017.
CMAT 2017: Eligibility Criteria
CMAT 2017 aims to select suitable students for admission in management programmes in 400 B-schools across the country. The on-line Registration for CMAT 2017 will be opened on October 10 and will be a 3 step process that can be completed in 15 to 20 minutes

The much awaited limited period application error correction process in CAT 2016 has begun and will close on October 5 but candidates are still confused whether they could correct the errors only once or number of times during the 5 days window. The point has not been clarified either by the CAT convener or the CAT 2016 website.
The information shared by Prof Rajendra K Bandi convener CAT 2016 says “For the first time, CAT 2016 enables an option to correct mistakes, if any, discovered after submission of the CAT application. Candidates will have an option to correct details like Percentage of Marks scored, Work Experience, and Programmes Selected. No other details can be edited. This option will be available on the CAT Application form Webpage from 1st to 5th of October, 2016.”
Confusion among candidates
Unlike the guidelines issued for CAT 2016 registration process where the candidate is allowed to login for multiple times to complete the application form and update the details in the form, the application error correction instructions do not further elaborate whether the candidates would be able to login once only to correct mistakes or will be allowed multiple times to login to correct the mistakes even after submission during the correction window which will remain open till October 5.
Candidates caught off-guard
Beware! Don’t try to go for error correction multiple times, this is the advice shared by number of candidates who logged in to edit the CAT 2016 application errors and submitted without completing the modification. Now they have found that they still have 1 or 2 details to correct but are not able to do it. The Edit option that opened on October 1, 2016 is not allowing them to login again to correct the remaining 1 or 2 mistakes in their percentage of marks, work experience or the programmes selected. For them the opening of edit option is as good as not opened.
After inadvertently submitting the application with few corrections still to be made you will get the message ‘Note: Your application has been edited and submitted successfully’ and then for you the edit option is closed. Now for you, the Edit Option facility has disappeared.
Had there been instructions that you can edit the errors only before submission of the form or you will be allowed to correct the errors only once, candidates would have been on their guard and would have not submitted the application form before completing the process.
CAT 2016: Website also not clarifies
According to CAT 2016 website “After you submit the application, there will be a limited time window during which can you modify very limited details like Percentage of Marks scored, Work Experience, Programmes Selected etc. You will not be able to modify any of the following: any details entered in the Personal Details section, any details entered in the Academics section except the percentage marks scored, Exam Centre City Preferences. You can only view and print after this. Details are available on the application submission page.”
Nowhere does it say that the limited period application correction of errors window will allow you to rectify the errors only once. On the contrary candidates think that they can correct the errors number of times till the error correction window is open.
Be careful!
CAT 2016 test takers can correct the errors in their application form only once now and till they submit their application form after error correction. Accordingly you should correct the errors only after gathering all the required option as the facility once used will be closed for you.
The facility was not allowed earlier as stated by CAT 2016 exam convener. Deviating from earlier practices in CAT registration process when no such edit facility of error correction was allowed after submitting the registration form and candidates had to re-register after making payment of registration fee again, IIM Bangalore has allowed the CAT 2016 aspirants to edit the mistakes discovered after submission of the CAT application.
You will not be able to modify any of the following: any details entered in the Personal Details section, any details entered in the Academics section, Exam Centre City Preferences. You can only view and print after this. Details are also available on the application submission page.
You cannot edit certain personal details like Name, Date of Birth, email id, mobile number in the CAT 2016 application form. If you have made mistakes in these details, please note that you will not receive a refund or Admit Card for your registration. The best way is to contact CAT 2016 help desk and get the solution from them.
CAT 2016: Non - Engineers prime target; IIMs announce changes in PGP 2017 admission policy
CAT 2016 aspirants coming from non-engineering background should expect a little easier passage to top IIMs with more weightage awarded to other factors than CAT scores. However, even the non-engineers will have to score high percentile in CAT 2016 to get shortlisted at the 1st stage.
Highly ranked Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) namely Ahmedabad, Bangalore Calcutta, Lucknow and Kozhikode have announced their admission policy and have announced to award lower weightage to CAT 2016 scores as against last year. Now the academic profile, non-engineering background with Arts/Commerce/Humanities will get higher weightage at the 1st stage shortlisting.
Accordingly, even a candidate who has scored above 90% marks in his/her class 10 to bachelor’s degree but does not go beyond 95-96 percentile score in CAT 2016, can expect to be shortlisted by the top IIMs who will award more weightage to other factors than to CAT 2016 scores only.
Low Weightage to CAT scores
IIM Bangalore while announcing its admission policy for PGP 2017-19 batch has made it clear that it would award only 40% weightage to CAT 2016 scores and rest 60% weightage will go to excellent academics, academic diversity, work experience and gender diversity.
Now if a candidate cracks CAT 2016 with 100 percentile but has only 60% or less marks in his academics will get 40% weightage only and almost 0% weightage in academics. The chances to get shortlisted are remote as against those candidates who have scored 90 percentile in CAT 2016 but have 90% and above marks in their academics from class 10 to bachelor’s degree.
The second category candidate will get 36% weightage for CAT 2016 scores; 50% for academic profile and on the top of it, if he has 3 years or above work experience, an additional weightage of 8% will be given to him. 2% weight will be awarded to female candidates.
IIM Ahmedabad: Lowest qualifying scores in CAT 2016
It is not only IIM Bangalore, but all the IIMs are going for the change. IIM Ahmedabad has already reduced its qualifying sectional percentile in CAT 2016 from 80 to 70 so that non-engineers who find it difficult to score high in Quant and Data Interpretation can also qualify and can be shortlisted at the 1st stage.
IIM Calcutta: Drastic change in admission process
IIM Calcutta has also reduced the weightage to CAT 2016 scores. For the first stage shortlisting for Personal Interview round, IIM Calcutta will award only 28 out of total 50 points to CAT 2016 score. This weightage was 67% last year but for admission to PGP 2017-19 batch it has been reduced to only 56%.
IIM Calcutta has increased award of weightage percentage from 30% to 40% upto class 12 marks to shortlist candidates at the first stage.
IIM Lucknow: CAT 2016 weight reduced to 60%
IIM Lucknow has reduced the weightage to CAT 2016 scores in 1st stage shortlisting to 60% from 78% in last year. In the final selection also CAT 2016 scores will be awarded weightage of only 30%.
CAT 2016 aspirants with non-engineering background and with excellent academic profile, seeking admission in PGP 2017-19 programme at IIM Lucknow should expect to be shortlisted even if they score a little low in CAT exam this year.
IIMs: in dire need of diversity
In fact almost all the 20 IIMs have been facing massive influx of engineers after every CAT exam in their class rooms. Out of 17 candidates scoring 100 percentile in CAT last year, it was difficult to find one or two non engineers. Besides, the ratio of female 100 percentilers during the past 2 years has remained 1 female to 15 or 16 male candidates.
IIMs are working towards the strategy to improve the ratio of non-engineers and female candidates in their class rooms to effect a good learning experience with optimum academic and gender diversity.
This was the reason that with effect from the 2015 CAT convened by IIM Ahmedabad concrete efforts were made to revamp CAT exam by inserting more number of sections and introducing different types of questions. This yielded good result and now carrying the initiative forward, CAT 2016 convener Prof Bandi proposes to move on the same pattern although there may be slight changes in the content level of the exam.
Sharing with MBAUniverse.com, Prof Rajendra Bandi, Convener CAT 2016 emphasised the need of higher number of registrations from Non-engineers and women candidates “We would like to see an increase in the number of applicants from the non-engineering background and from female applicants as well.”
Adding further Prof Bandi, CAT 2016 convener said, “We believe that having a good mix of candidates from both the genders, and from all academic backgrounds enriches management education.”
46% Non-engineers registered for CAT last year
CAT 2016: Error correction in application form activated; 3 types of changes allowed
CAT 2016 exam centre has activated today the error correction module which allows changes in Percentage of marks scored, Work experience and Programmes selected

The error correction process after submission of CAT 2016 application form has been enabled today on October 1 as earlier promised by Convener CAT 2016 Prof Rajendra Bandi, faculty at IIM Bangalore. In case of any mistake made while filling in the CAT 2016 registration form, candidates have 5 days to rectify these errors. The activation of the error correction module by IIM Bangalore is with a rider that only limited 3 type of mistakes can be corrected.
CAT 2016 exam centre has activated today the error correction module to change certain details in the submitted application form for CAT 2016.
