On 29 May, 2026, The Earth Prize 2026 revealed its Global Winner – 16-year-old Indian teens Vivaan Chhawchharia, Ariana Agarwal and Avyana Mehta.
The announcement was made today during The Earth Prize 2026 Global Awards Ceremony held in Geneva, Switzerland.
The trio won for their innovation, Plas-Stick - a biodegradable magnetic tamarind powder that removes microplastics from water.
Vivaan Chhawchharia, Ariana Agarwal and Avyana Mehta had visited a rural community in India and seen water being stored in shared plastic containers.
No filtration systems. No hygiene. No awareness about microplastics.
Concerned about safe drinking water and its availability to underserved rural communities in India, the trio developed a biodegradable powder made from discarded tamarind (imli) seeds.
“When added to water, the powder attracts and binds microplastic particles into visible clumps that can then be removed using a handheld magnet. Designed to work without electricity or complex machinery, the solution is low-cost and scalable,” The Earth Prize 2026 press release states.
With a successful outreach to more than 8,000 students and teachers in India, the Plas-Stick team has teamed up with professionals from IIT Guwahati to test and scale the technology further.
At The Earth Prize 2026, Plas-Stick had already won the Regional Winner award for Asia, beating 6,000+ entries worldwide. The team had also secured $12.5K to scale their solution.
Last week, 23,000 people cast their votes to select the Global Winner from seven Regional Winners across North America, Africa, Asia, Central and South America, Oceania and Southeast Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.
Vivaan Chhawchharia, Ariana Agarwal and Avyana Mehta emerged the Global Winner for The Earth Prize 2026, also becoming the first-ever Global Winner from India.
In their words, “Being named the Global Winners of The Earth Prize is incredibly special for all of us, especially as the first team from India to receive this recognition. What started as an idea between students has now been recognised among thousands of projects from around the world, which feels both surreal and deeply motivating.”
