जुगनू बना तारा

उन दिनों धर्मेंद्र की जुगनू फ़िल्म बहुत चली थी। ठाकुर सर का चलने का अंदाज़ बहुत निराला था । NCC के अफ़सर होने की अदा भी उसमें दिखती थी।

एक बरसाती दिन में, स्कूल पहाड़ी पर होने के कारण धुँध छाई हुई थी । ठाकुर सर उस धुँध में दूर से चलते आ रहे थे .. उन्हें देख जुगनू के धर्मेंद्र की याद आ गई। दोस्त बोला “देखो वह जुगनू आ रहा है” .

तब से हम कुछ दोस्त आपस की बातों में उनका उल्लेख “जुगनू” कह कर करते थे। “अरे टाईम पर चलो, जुगनू का पीरियड है”। और उनका पीरियड मिस करने का सवाल ही नहीं पैदा होता था।

उनकी वजह से ही अंग्रेज़ी के चार वाक्य ठीक से लिखना बोलना सीख सके। क्लास में आकर बस पुस्तक खोल कर पढ़ाना उनका तरीक़ा नहीं था । उन्होंने अंग्रेज़ी भाषा के प्रति रुचि जगाई। अब भी उनके सिखाए हुए कुछ वाक्य याद हैं, जैसे:
- My dear deer is very dear
- Water water everywhere, but not a drop to drink

तीन साल पहले Demoite के वार्षिक उत्सव में ठाकुर सर से मुलाक़ात हुई, चालीस साल बाद। उन्हें अपनी लिखी अंग्रेज़ी पुस्तकें भेंट देने में गर्व तो हुआ, पर डर भी लगा। क्या मालूम भाषा उनकी अपेक्षा के अनुरूप है भी या नहीं?

परसों ही एक मित्र ने बीमारी की खबर दी थी और आज उनके जाने की खबर आई। हमारा जुगनू, अब तारा बन गया। ठाकुर सर जैसे लोग जाते नहीं, हमारी स्मृतियों में सदा समाए रहते हैं।

सर जब भी हम अंग्रेज़ी लिखेंगे, आप की याद आएगी।

Play Store – the dark side

Last weekend was spent in trying to track and analyse transactions, the result was shocking to say the least. Hence thought of sharing, even if it is bit long.

That noon one of our maids came to me with her updated passbook. She saw some strange debits on which she had no clue, she didn’t remember seeing any bankSMS. She had asked the bank, who were unable to help.

She felt the trouble started after she installed Google Pay on the phone. I checked her passbook, there were several UPI transactions debits, all of them were to one party with “EURONET” appearing in reference.

This smelt like a cyber fraud. I contacted Google Pay on chat, explaining the issue. They asked to launch a compliant from the same mobile. He, however told me that that EURONET is usually a “recharge”.

I asked her for phone, this is when she disclosed that particular phone is with her teenage son. He has to attend online classes so she gave the smartphone to the kid and was using an ordinary phone. Seeing the risk, I asked her to immediately withdraw maximum cash from ATM (banks were closed on Sat-Sun), and get that phone.

She could withdraw only as per daily limit, so the risk was still around. When she brought the phone, hunt stated. GPay was already deleted from phone, which I reinstalled. However, the transaction history was blank. GPay wanted screen shots, which were missing. There were no bank SMS of those transactions.

Perplexed, I started searching all apps they appeared clean until I opened inbox of Gmail. It unfolded whole story. The kid had got into gaming big time, the emails reveealed several “in-app” purchases for games like “Free Fire New Age”; “Asphalt-8 Car Racing”etc.

Her son had linked Google Play Store to GPay. Using that he bought recharge coupons from Google Play Store and redeemed them to buy various packs for games. In three weeks he had blown over ₹20,000, which was like two months earning for the mother.

Wonder if the boy was ignorant or indifferent? Was it mother’s fault ? Do the game developers and Googles of this world (includes Apple also) own any moral responsibility?

Probably not, that is why sharing this incident. As long as we have Covid situations, on line classes would be a reality , few things that a parent can do:

1. Don’t handover a phone to child which is linked to bank account or Aadhar or any other such important thing.

2. Don’t get swayed into “our child is smart, knows more than us”. Do keep an eye on what they are doing . This age is critical

Did you learn English with Purohit Sir ?

Many of us coming from Hindi primary schools were introduced to English only in 6th standard. This may sound amusing in current days.

It was Purohit sir, who introduced us English in 6th standard. The alphabets, the “four line” book, cursive writing .. If we can fluently read, write and speak English , a major credit goes to Purohit sir.

Received message that G. L. Purohit sir breathed his last in Indore two day back. He had settled in Indore some time back after the retirement.

Let us pray for his soul to rest in peace. Om Shanti

चलिए समय की यात्रा पर
Getting back in time

जुलाई शुरु हो गया, स्कूल खुलने का समय, पर अब भी पढ़ाई ऑन लाईन है। आप सभी पूर्व छात्र अलग अलग समय से हैं, कुछ 70 के दशक से, कुछ 80, कुछ नब्बे और कई युवा 2000 के बाद के। हर समय सुविधाएं अलग-अलग थीं।

सोचिए, अगर आप जब स्कूल में थे, तब लॉक डाऊन होता तो आप क्या करते? कैसे पढ़ते, कैसे मित्रों से मिलते? बस लिख दीजिए कुछ लाइनें, कमेंट में, बड़ा रोचक रहेगा हर एक को सुनना।

Just get back into the time and think if lockdown was to happen when you were in school, how would you have managed studies ?How you would have connected with friends?

DEMOELITE

Every year, Demoelite get together is held at Bhopal, where teachers and alumni participate. Some of us had great experience last year in April 2019. This year’s event might get delayed, hence sharing few pictures from 2019 event.
