A massive shift for India’s heavy transport sector! Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has confirmed that the government is seriously considering a mandate to blend up to 15% isobutanol with diesel.
Since India consumes nearly twice as much diesel as petrol, this single policy move is expected to have a far more massive impact on reducing the country's crude oil import bill and achieving its Net Zero goals than the existing ethanol-petrol programme.
🧪 Why Isobutanol Over Ethanol?
India initially experimented with blending ethanol into diesel, but the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) had to abandon trials beyond 5% due to severe technical failures like engine knocking, power loss, and fuel separation. Isobutanol (a higher, four-carbon alcohol) solves these issues:
Higher Energy Density: Isobutanol packs significantly more energy per litre than ethanol, meaning truck and bus owners will experience virtually no noticeable drop in mileage or torque.
Engine & Infrastructure Friendly: Unlike ethanol, it is highly stable, less volatile, and far less corrosive, meaning it can mix seamlessly with diesel and run in existing engines with minimal to no modifications.
Safer Handling: It has a higher flash point, making it much safer to store, transport, and dispense at fuel stations.

With the country importing over 85% of its crude oil requirements, this move transitions India's biofuel roadmap directly into the heavy-duty commercial vehicle segment.
Strategic research led by Hindustan Petroleum (HPCL) in Bengaluru and Bharat Petroleum (BPCL) has yielded highly encouraging real-world testing results.
