People living in the cyber age expect much more from life. There were times when Kulluites were bothered just about their bread and butter. Time wasn't spent in reading books or watching television, but in the orchards taking care of the crops and rearing sheep. With passage of time knowledge spread all over and people awakened.
From mere 10 schools in 1948, Kullu now has a widespread network of 958 schools. A number of vocational institutions are there to provide job opportunities to people and a large number of computer centres striving to acquaint people with the wonders a computer can create. People go in for jobs and look out for new forms of business.
According to 2001 census literacy rate in the valley is 73.36%, out of which the number of males who are literate in the valley are 84.55% and women are 61.24%. It has been observed that in the last decade i.e. from 1991 to 2001 the growth rate in literacy has been 25.60%. There has been an increase of 19% in literacy in proportion to the growth of population, which is 69 people per square kilometre. All that can be said is that the condition has greatly improved in the past few years. The spirits of people of the valley are enlightened and their outlook has broadened. Kullu has found a place on the world map as a centre of tourist attraction and it couldn't have been possible if the people here wouldn't have realized the importance of the place they resided in. This has only been possible after people gained education.

Effective Fall 2010, students who are in good academic standing who wish to pursue study that is relevant to the their University of Michigan Ph.D. at another education institution may apply for Extramural Study status. The course or program of study must be for a period that overlaps substantially (minimum seven weeks) with a University of Michigan fall or winter term. Students must seek authorization in advance for Extramural Study status, providing documentation regarding course or program details as well as documentation of enrollment. Extramural Study enables students approved for this status to remain active in their Ph.D. program.

President Charles M. Vest: I commend this study of Women Faculty in Science to all of my faculty colleagues. Please read it, contemplate its messages and information, and act upon it personally and collectively.
I learned two particularly important lessons from this report and from discussions while it was being crafted. First, I have always believed that contemporary gender discrimination within universities is part reality and part perception. True, but I now understand that reality is by far the greater part of the balance. Second, I, like most of my male colleagues, believe that we are highly supportive of our junior women faculty members. This also is true. They generally are content and well supported in many, though not all dimensions. However, I sat bolt upright in my chair when a senior woman, who has felt unfairly treated for some time, said "I also felt very positive when I was young."
We can take pride in the candor of dialog that these women have brought to this issue and in the progress that we have made, but much remains to be done. Our remarkably diverse student body must be matched by an equally diverse faculty. Through our institutional commitment and policies we must redouble our efforts to make this a reality.
