Jammu and Kashmir’s armless archer Sheetal Devi, a Paralympics medallist, edged out quadruple amputee Payal Nag of Odisha to win gold in a much-anticipated clash at the Khelo India Para Games on Sunday.
In a gripping battle between two teenagers, defending champion Sheetal came from behind to secure her second gold medal of the Games at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. The 18-year-old triumphed 109–103 against 17-year-old Payal in a thrilling contest.
Payal, who lost all four limbs due to electrocution as a child, shoots using prosthetic legs. Despite the sunny and windy conditions in the national capital, both archers displayed extraordinary determination and skill.
Payal briefly held the upper hand but lost momentum in the third round after shooting a 7, while Sheetal returned to her consistent form with multiple 10s to seal the victory in the deciding fifth round.
“I use two devices attached to my prosthetic legs to release the arrows. There was some discomfort and strong winds today, but I’m happy to have reached the final and won silver,” Payal said.
Both athletes proved that true strength lies in courage, resilience, and an unbreakable spirit. 💪🔥
