Meet Sunita Williams, a trailblazing astronaut who’s breaking records and inspiring millions!

*Early Life & Education*
Born on September 19, 1965, in Euclid, Ohio, Sunita is the daughter of Indian-American neuroanatomist Deepak Pandya and Slovene-American Ursuline Bonnie ¹. She graduated from Needham High School in 1983 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in physical science from the United States Naval Academy in 1987.

*Achievements*

- *Spacewalk Records*: Sunita holds the record for the most spacewalks by a woman (9) and the most time spent on spacewalks by a woman (62 hours and 6 minutes) ¹.
- *Marathon in Space*: On April 16, 2007, she became the first person to complete a marathon in space, finishing the Boston Marathon in 4 hours and 24 minutes ².
- *Triathlon in Space*: On September 17, 2012, she became the first person to complete a triathlon in space, using the International Space Station’s treadmill, stationary bike, and resistance exercises ².
- *Longest Single Spaceflight by a Woman*: She spent 192 days in space from December 2006 to June 2007, setting a record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman ².
- *Commander of the International Space Station*: She became the commander of the ISS on September 17, 2012, and again in September 2024 ¹.

- *Padma Bhushan*: India’s third-highest civilian award
- *Legion of Merit*: A US military award for exceptional service
