👁 Surgeons Remove Spinal Tumor Through Eye Socket—A World First in Medical Innovation
In a stunning leap for neurosurgical science, doctors at the University of Maryland Medical Center have successfully removed a spinal tumor through a patient’s eye socket—a world-first procedure that redefines the boundaries of minimally invasive surgery.
🧠 The patient, 19-year-old Karla Flores, was diagnosed with an aggressive chordoma tumor wrapped around her cervical spine and dangerously compressing her spinal cord. Traditional surgical routes risked damaging vital blood vessels and nerves.
Instead, Dr. Mohamed A.M. Labib and his multidisciplinary team pioneered a transorbital approach—a technique previously used for brain surgery but never for spinal access. By entering through the eye socket, they created a precise surgical corridor that:
• Avoided external incisions
• Preserved key neurological structures
• Enabled complete tumor removal
🔬 This breakthrough was made possible through extensive cadaver-based training and cutting-edge surgical planning. Following tumor extraction, Flores underwent proton radiation and spinal fusion surgery, and today—at age 20—she is cancer-free and recovering well.
This groundbreaking operation not only saved Karla’s life but also opened a new frontier in neurosurgical innovation, proving that with anatomical precision, teamwork, and daring, medicine can reach places once thought impossible.

Russia has officially launched human trials for a personalized mRNA cancer vaccine, aiming to combat melanoma using AI-driven tumor sequencing. The technology allows for a tailor-made vaccine to be developed in just one week, based on a patient’s unique genetic profile. Trials are taking place at top oncology centers in Moscow, with results expected to influence global cancer treatment protocols.
Backed by state funding, each dose—valued at over 300,000 rubles—is being provided completely free to eligible Russian citizens. Experts view this as a bold step toward revolutionizing cancer immunotherapy, with many watching closely to see if Russia's strategy sets a precedent for future international breakthroughs.

The world's first human bladder transplant was successfully performed on May 4, 2025, at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. The recipient, 41-year-old Oscar Larrainzar, received both a kidney and a bladder from a single donor. The surgery, a joint effort by surgeons from Keck Medicine of USC and UCLA Health, lasted eight hours.
