Studio Tarang -Celebration of Indian Traditional Games

Studio Tarang recently hosted an exciting event in its very own Belgaum, that brought back the joy of Indian traditional games, connecting generations through play. The event witnessed an overwhelming response as kids and adults immersed themselves in the nostalgia of these timeless games.

To make the experience even more enriching, we also organized a free coloring activity for kids, allowing them to explore their creativity in an open space without time boundaries. With colors in hand and imagination at play, children found a relaxing escape, expressing their thoughts and emotions through vibrant hues.

Among the highlights was Chowka Bara, a game of strategy and luck known by different names across India—Ashta Chamma in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Pakidakali in Kerala, Daayam in Tamil Nadu, and Athi Kayi in Karnataka. Players eagerly rolled cowrie shells and planned their moves, bringing the ancient game to life with enthusiasm.

Another favorite was Snakes and Ladders, a game with deep roots in Indian philosophy. Originally called Moksha Patam, it was designed to teach moral values, where ladders represented virtues leading to success, while snakes symbolized vices that caused setbacks. The thrill of climbing ladders and avoiding snakes kept everyone engaged, proving that traditional games still hold a special place in our hearts.

The event was not just about games—it was a journey into India’s rich cultural heritage, reminding us of the importance of play in learning, bonding, and keeping traditions alive. Seeing the excitement and joy on everyone’s faces reaffirmed our belief in reviving these age-old games for the next generation.

At Studio Tarang, we are committed to preserving and promoting Indian traditions, making them relevant and enjoyable for today’s families. Stay tuned for more such events where culture meets creativity!

PART 2

4. Staying Calm in Success and Failure

Shloka:
सुखदुःखे समे कृत्वा लाभालाभौ जयाजयौ।
ततो युद्धाय युज्यस्व नैवं पापमवाप्स्यसि॥
(Bhagavad Gita - Chapter 2, Verse 38)
“Treat happiness and distress, gain and loss, and victory and defeat equally, and then you will not incur sin.”

Lesson for Kids:
Teach kids not to get too upset when they lose or overly excited when they win.

If they lose a game, remind them that the fun of playing is what matters most.

Use a seesaw as an example: “Life has ups and downs, just like a seesaw. Staying balanced makes the ride enjoyable.”

5. Being Present and Grateful

Shloka:
"यदृच्छालाभसन्तुष्टो द्वन्द्वातीतो विमत्सरः।
समः सिद्धावसिद्धौ च कृत्वापि न निबध्यते॥
(Bhagavad Gita - Chapter 4, Verse 22)
“One who is content with whatever comes by chance, free from envy, and steady in success and failure, is never bound by actions.”

Lesson for Kids:
Gratitude and mindfulness help children stay happy in the present moment.

During meals, say: “Let’s enjoy this delicious food and thank everyone who made it possible—farmers, cooks, and even the plants!” Ask them to start a gratitude journal and write down one thing they are thankful for every day.

Tips for Parents

Storytelling Time: Share small stories from the Gita in a fun way. For example, talk about Krishna driving Arjuna’s chariot and relate it to teamwork.

Art and Play: Ask your kids to draw their favorite scene from the Gita or act out Krishna’s teachings.

Family Discussions: At the dinner table, ask: “What’s one challenge you faced today, and how did you handle it?” Then connect it to a Gita lesson.

Daily Shloka Practice: Teach one simple shloka, like “Yogah Karmasu Kaushalam” (Excellence in action is yoga), and its meaning

The Bhagavad Gita offers wisdom that’s as relevant today as it was thousands of years ago. By introducing its lessons in an engaging and relatable way, we can help our children grow into mindful, resilient, and compassionate individuals.

How do you incorporate the Gita’s teachings into your parenting or education methods? Share your thoughts and ideas below!

"Many parents often ask me how to introduce the Bhagavad Gita to young children in a way that sparks their interest and helps them grasp the timeless wisdom it holds. To address this, I am sharing this post in two parts, designed to guide parents on making the teachings of the Gita engaging and relatable for children."

*PART 1*

On this auspicious day of Gita Jayanti, let’s reflect on how the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita can serve as a guiding light for our children in their journey of growth, education, and intellectual development.

The Gita is not just a spiritual text—it’s a treasure trove of life lessons that children can internalize for their holistic development. I have listed a few shlokas as examples to show parents as to how they can incorporate Gita in daily activities to make children learn!!

1. Hard Work Without Worrying About Results

Shloka:
कर्मण्येवाधिकारस्ते मा फलेषु कदाचन।
मा कर्मफलहेतुर्भूर्मा ते सङ्गोऽस्त्वकर्मणि॥
(Bhagavad Gita - Chapter 2, Verse 47)
“You have the right to perform your duties, but you are not entitled to the fruits of your actions. Do not let the results motivate you, and do not be attached to inaction.”

Lesson for Kids:
Teach children to focus on their efforts rather than being anxious about outcomes. For example:

While studying for exams, encourage them to enjoy the process of learning instead of worrying about grades.

Relate it to building a sandcastle. It’s about the joy of building, not how long it stands.

2. Facing Fears

Shloka:
स्वल्पमप्यस्य धर्मस्य त्रायते महतो भयात्।
(Bhagavad Gita - Chapter 2, Verse 40)
“Even a little practice of this discipline will protect you from great fear.”

Lesson for Kids:
This shloka teaches that every small effort matters in overcoming challenges.

Relate it to learning to ride a bike/cycle!! “Each attempt makes you less scared and gets you closer to success.”

Explain how Krishna helped Arjuna face his fears, just like parents guide their children.

3. The Power of Focus

Shloka:
व्यवसायात्मिका बुद्धिरेकेह कुरुनन्दन।
बहुशाखा ह्यनन्ताश्च बुद्धयोऽव्यवसायिनाम्॥
(Bhagavad Gita - Chapter 2, Verse 41)
“One who is resolute in purpose has a single-pointed focus, while those who are indecisive are distracted by many branches.”

Lesson for Kids:
Focus is the key to success.

Connect this to schoolwork: “When you do your homework, stay away from distractions like TV or games. Focus on one thing at a time, just like Arjuna focused on the bird’s eye.”

Create a game: See how long your child can concentrate on solving a puzzle without getting distracted.

"A Canvas of Creativity"

This Children’s Day, I had the privilege of stepping into a world filled with imagination, innocence, and boundless creativity as a Jury for a Painting Competition organized by BSC Textiles and Magneta Ice Cream along with Shilpa Khadkbhavi Ma’am, a senior artist with unmatched creativity, her work reflects elegance and passion. Beyond her artistic brilliance, she is known for her humility and approachable nature.

It was a heartwarming celebration of young talent, and the experience left me with deep insights and learnings that I’ll cherish for a lifetime.

The competition wasn’t just about art—it was a window into the minds of young creators and their families. As each child splashed colors onto the canvas, I couldn’t help but marvel at the stories they were telling. What stood out were the unspoken messages woven into their paintings, shaped by their observations, emotions, and, undoubtedly, the nurturing environment at home.

My Learnings...

Themes as Reflections of Thought -

Some children painted vibrant festival shopping experiences, while others brought environmental concerns to life. The choice of theme often mirrored their parents’ guidance, reflecting a balance of tradition, awareness, and aspirations.

Attention to Detail -

From intricate patterns to bold expressions, the details spoke volumes about the encouragement and patience these young artists received. It was a testament to the importance of fostering curiosity and creativity in children.

The Language of Colors-

Bright, confident strokes showed fearlessness and optimism, while softer tones reflected sensitivity and introspection. The way children used colors gave me a glimpse into their emotions and how they view the world.

A Deeper Perspective:

Judging the competition allowed me to analyze parental influence in a subtle yet powerful way. Behind every masterpiece was a story of encouragement, love, and freedom to express. It reminded me how crucial it is for parents to nurture creativity without imposing boundaries.

The event was not just about selecting winners; it was about celebrating every child’s unique voice and imagination. I felt humbled and inspired to see how art can be a medium for children to explore, express, and connect.

Thank you to BSC Textiles and Magnetta Ice Creams for creating such a platform for young minds. And to the parents and children, thank you for reminding us that the world is so much brighter when seen through your eyes.

To every child: Keep painting your dreams. The canvas is yours to conquer.

A special mention about Belgaum witnessing a wave of creative entrepreneurship, with inspiring Sidnal siblings—Indrajeet, Digvijay, and Vaibhavi. Together, they’ve introduced Magneta Ice Creams, a venture that blends innovation with irresistible flavors!

Not to forget Supreet and Khalil from MeyendStudio every year for giving us this creative opportunity!!!! Thanks buddies ❤️
