Labourer gets new lease of life post cervical surgery at SOTC
Belagavi: A 36 year old laborer and father of two young girls has received a new lease on life after undergoing successful cervical surgery for a broken neck city based Shree Ortho and Trauma Centre (SOTC) on Tuesday.
The procedure was performed by renowned Consulting Orthopaedic and Spine Surgeon Dr Devagoudah Imaggoudanavar and Dr Anand while the surgical intervention has now averted the fear of the patient suffering from paralysis of both arms and limbs.
Ijahmad Shaik a resident of Hukkeri native of Nippani is a fabrication labourar who carries out gas and electric welding works visiting working sites. While at work with other laborers to fix some structure at Bastwad village, the structure collapsed over him resulting in Ijahmad suffering serios injuries on the neck.
The patient was rushed to local hospital but later had gone totally immobile following the untoward incident where in doctors had noticed required advanced treatment. The incident had occurred on labour’s day.
With serious deformity the patient got admitted at SOTC on May 12 wherein he was diagnosed for a broken neck with C4-C5 fracture and dislocation associated with serious paresis and immobility, making patient bed ridden that deprived him of daily chore.
The surgery requires lot of skill and life-threatening risks like chances of complete upper limb lower limb paralysis, respiratory paralysis and death.
Without further delay Dr Devagoudah and team performed surgical reduction of dislocation and wiring from back of neck after turning the patient Anterior Cervical Discectomy, bone grafting & fusion with plating procedure from the front of neck. This surgery involves removing the damaged disc and fusing the affected vertebrate to stabilize the spine and relive pressure on the spinal cord and nerves.
Afte a successful surgery that spanned couple of hours the patient is now recuperating. Dr Devagoudah explained that “it is complex procedure, the patient was at a risk of completely getting paralyzed from both arms and limbs. The patient now following a rehabilitation program will regain strength, mobility and will soon become normal.
Patients mother Dilshad expressed happiness over the condition of her son post-surgery.
