FIELD STUDY on INSTRUMENT MAKING and TUNING PROCESS.
As part of the curriculum of Paper 403, the students of 4th Semester of Hindustani Vocal Music and Khol Vadya undertook an educational field study to Barpeta on 29th May, 2026. The visit was organized to provide practical knowledge regarding the traditional methods of musical instrument making and tuning.
During this visit, the students closely observed the artisans engaged in the preparation and maintenance of various musical instruments like string, percussion, metallic, wind instruments etc. Detailed explanations were provided regarding the selection of raw materials, shaping of wooden components, preparation of drum heads, and assembly procedures.
This field study to “Saraswati Vadya Mandir” Barpeta, was highly informative and beneficial. It provided first-hand knowledge of instrument making and tuning processes, enriching the academic and practical understanding of the students and contributed significantly to the students’ appreciation of traditional musical craftsmanship and Sattriya cultural heritage.

It was an extraordinary experience for our students — connecting directly with history, art, and culture where it’s kept alive.
