Since its inception, department
has excelled in the teaching and research
in the field of Condensed Matter Physics,
Material Science, Nuclear Physics,
Electronics and Spectroscopy, both in
theory and experiment. The University
Grants Commission had granted the
Department Research Support (DRS) phases
I, II & III and COSIST programs to the
department by identifying Condensed
Matter Physics as thrus
t research area. In
addition to this, various funding agencies
have granted about 2.04 cores for
supporting ongoing research activities of
the department while, department has
obtained approximately 3.5 crores, during
last five years. The research interests of
department cover Condensed matter
(Nanostructures, Nanomaterials, and
Polymers etc.), Nuclear physics, Particle
Physics, Atomic physics and Molecular
Spectroscopy. Department is publishing
about 30 research papers every year in
International and National journals. Department has organized several national
and international conferences and many
faculty members have gone abroad as
visiting scientists, in recent past. degree course
with the annual intakes of 120 and 52
students, respectively. Department also
teaches Bio-Medical Physics to
Physiotherapy and DMRD students from
medical college. Students are being
selected for higher studies in premier
institutions of India and abroad and some
of them are doing extremely well. Sam
Pitroda, Chairman, National Knowledge
Commission, India and Prof. A.K. Roychaudhuri, Director, S.N. Bose National
Centre for Basic Sciences, Kolkata are two
well known alumni among many others. Every faculty members have been
provided with computer internet facilities
at their desk and research laboratories
have workstations and other higher
configured computers for advanced
theoretical work. The existing research
facilities cost around 1.6 crores. Two of the
oldest and famous observatories
associated to physics department are: (i)
Astronomical observatory a gift from the
late Sir Sayajirao Gaekwad, The Maharaja of
Vadodara. It was built during the 2nd
world war and was commissioned for use
in 1939. It houses an 8-inch refractor
telescope which is still one of the biggest
of its kind in India. The observatory has
been visited by several well known
scientists. (ii) Meteorological observatory is
one of the oldest meteorological
observatories in India. The observatory
consists of hundred years of record on
maximum & minimum temperature,
rainfall, wind direction & speed,
atmospheric pressure etc. It started
functioning at its present place in the year
of 1913.
