THE HERMIT AND THE SCORPION

There lived a hermit on the bank of the Ganga. Every morning he took bath in the river. One day he was offering his prayers after his bath. He saw a scorpion floating on the water. The current of the river was pushing it in the middle. The hermit took pity on the little creature. He went up to the stream and lifted it on his palm. But it stung him on his fingers The hermit felt the pain of stinging. His hand trembled and the scorpion fell into the water The hermit picked it up once more but again he was stung. The hermit kept on trying to save the creature. The scorpion was at last saved.

A person was watching all this. He asked the hermit, "Why did you save the scorpion? It was stinging you all the time. It is an evil creature." The hermit replied, "If the scorpion cannot give up its nature, why should I? It is the nature of a good person to help all in distress."
