Indian Railways is tackling the issue of unclean and unpleasant toilets in trains and stations head-on using tech.
A pilot project — led by Mumbai-based startup Viliso Technologies — is underway which uses IoT (Internet of Things) to sniff out the problem!
One of their IoT devices to be installed is named ‘Gandhvedh’, which can track odour, total volatile organic compound (TVOC), temperature, and humidity in toilets.
Here’s how this smart system works:
> Sensors will be installed in train toilets to detect bad odours.
> The sensors act like tiny noses, picking up unpleasant smells in the air.
> This data is then sent to a central hub for real-time analysis.
> If the analysis detects a problem, the hub can automatically alert sanitation staff, ensuring a swift response.
This innovative approach allows for real-time monitoring and faster intervention, leading to better odour management and a more pleasant travel experience for everyone.
What do you think of this innovative way of tackling smelly washrooms in trains?

Vitamin K is a compound that is crucial for blood clotting.
Nobel Prize laureate Edward Doisy was the first person to produce it in a pure form. By studying different analogues he established the distinction between vitamin K1 (shown) which was isolated from alfalfa, and vitamin K2, isolated from fish meal. His work became especially important in treating bleeding among small children.

"At school I had a teacher that didn't like me and I didn't like him. At the end of the year he decided to fail me. The ironic thing is that the topic was chemistry.
I have the distinction of being the only chemistry laureate who failed the topic in high school!"
