To start a career as a fashion designer, two types of qualifications are required, that is, natural and acquired.

• Natural: this skill set would comprise of a decent aesthetic sense, colour expertise, good taste and sense of trends and fashion. An eye for detail, knowledge of fabrics and so on is a big plus for those serious about a career as a fashion designer.

• Acquired skills would be a qualification from a decent, recognized fashion Institute. You can enrol for either a full-time course or a part time certificate course. Students usually take these up after their 10+2 level. Not that the courses are not available for graduates or people with higher qualification. There are several short-term certificate courses that are offered by the same fashion institutes for super specialization, on part-time basis. These courses equip you with technical and creative thinking skills.

Start Early
The word ‘fashion’ immediately conjures up images of glitz and glamour. The onset of the International fashion MARKET in India has given an impetus to the fashion industry which has emerged as the booming industry and a career as a fashion designer is like a pot of gold. So, many young people who are attracted by these attributes decide to foray into the fashion industry.

While the academic requirements are not very high, you need considerable aptitude and talent to be labelled “designer” material. You must be highly creative to combine colours, shades and textures and express your ideas through sketches.

Your race for admission into a reputed fashion school will begin straight after school. Subjects like drawing, painting, home science and computer graphics will develop your creativity.

By the time you finish the course you will have mastered the step-by-step making of a garment: from designing to pattern making, production and even MARKETING.

Funding/Scholarship
Some fashion academies extend merit based scholarships. These scholarships usually waive off payment of tuition fee only. These waivers continue in the subsequent year(s) on the condition that the awardees academic performance meets the prescribed standards of achievement.

The criterion of these scholarship programmes is based on the annual income of the eligible student’s parental annual income. There are a few scholarships sponsored by reputed companies for meritorious and FINANCIALLYdeserving students. Scholarship awardees also get educational loan facility to cover other payable fee and expenses.

Job Prospect
In India, the fashion industry has just begun to come of age, as it is still in its fledgling stage. This industry offers plenty of opportunities for talented hard working and enthusiastic people. Prospects for fashion design graduates are pretty good thanks to the huge and still growing demand for “designer wear” and the equally outsized quantity of exports.

After successful completion of the course, you can remain self employed. Alternatively, several export houses, garment store chains, textile mills, leather companies, boutiques, fashion show organizers, jewellery houses and media houses recruit professionals interested in a career in fashion designing.

The Starting monthly package can be around Rs.10, 000 to Rs.15, 000. Careers in fashion

It is said that fashion wears out more apparel than man. This seems true when one looks back at the various trends, fads and movements that have come and gone over the years. Fashion, today, is a thriving industry that constantly attracts and distracts our attention with its varied offerings.
The Indian fashion industry has finally come of age. India has been a source of luxurious fabrics in ancient times. During its decades of repression under colonial rule, it continued as a manufacturer of raw materials for fabrics. But in a traditionally frugal Indian society, the final stamp of credibility only came about with the media explosion. These days, almost all newspapers and television channels carry programmes, columns or articles on fashion. Yet, as a career, fashion can be both demanding as well as rewarding — a career that offers a lot of hype, glamour as well as stiff competition in the initial stages. People in this industry are able to appear in the public eye, not just as professionals, but as personalities as well. Career avenues within the fashion industry can be broadly classified into three — designing (fashion and textile), merchandising and associated functions.

Fashion designing

This is by far the most popular choice of jobs within the fashion industry. A fashion designer is the person who is responsible for conceiving the product. It is the designer who carefully studies the trends and the market and comes up with a winning ensemble of clothes. Of course, there’s a large amount of creativity and inspired hard work involved. Ideas can come from anywhere and it’s not unknown for designers to research and incorporate themes that are as varied as tribal motifs to space technology into the clothes they design. “Although the basic requirements of this line are a good hand at sketching or drawing, sewing and pattern making; an innovative and open mind is something that can prove invaluable to any designer,” says Payal Jain, fashion designer by profession.
“As a fashion designer, one needs to be able to draw basic silhouettes, work with a mannequin (A dress makers model or dummy, shaped like a human figure, which enables a designer to see how the garment will look when worn) and develop existing styles. The advent of computers has meant that a working knowledge of fashion-specific applications such as Computer Aided Design and Computer Aided Manufacturing is also important,” she adds.
Fashion design involves sketching, designing, drafting, basic pattern making and garment construction. The most important prerequisite is an interest and aptitude for art. That’s not where it ends, designers also need to know about the areas within the industry that are related to their job. Different market segments have different needs. For example, if the target is the domestic sector then the garments should portray ethnicity and cultural elements of the country. Outside of the industry, a designer must be aware of what is going on in world markets. Today, there is a growing need for designers who understand international trends.
Where to study
The most popular institutes in Delhi are the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Pearl Academy of Fashion, the International Institute of Fashion Technology (IIFT) and JD Institute of Fashion Technology. Fashion designing courses are also offered at a few women’s polytechnics and at the YWCA. Diploma courses are available either at the undergraduate level, where courses are usually of a year’s duration, or at the postgraduate level where the duration is usually two years. Computer applications in the field of fashion have also become standard fare at these institutions. Comprehensive three-year undergraduate diploma courses are also available from larger institutes such as NIFT. Most courses usually incorporate a short period of on-the-job training with an organisation. The idea is to impart practical training along with counseling. This enables the student to gain valuable practical experience.
In recent times, one has seen numerous smaller institutes jump onto the fashion bandwagon. According to Mrs Reema Vij, Vice Principal, IIFT, “Indian society has traditionally been very conservative in accepting fashion as a career. However, with media hype and with so many institutes coming up, it is fast becoming very viable.” The effectiveness of these courses is, however, debatable as they are quite costly and fees range from Rs 9,100 for a year-long course to Rs 47,700 for a 3-year course.
Job opportunities
A young designer can either join an export or design house and work for the domestic market, or work with a professional designer. This choice is primarily to do with one’s willingness to work within an organisation or under another designer. Designers also have the option of launching their own label after having worked for a while. Starting salaries in the industry are usually at around Rs 5,000 per month. One should bear in mind that while the idea of being a fashion designer is an attractive one, levels of competition in the industry have risen quite high in recent times. What finally makes the difference between being hired and not being hired is the designer’s general awareness and where-with-it-all. Value additions such as a familiarity with computers do go a long way to making a difference to one’s employment prospects. Fashion design is as vast a field as fashion itself. The best advice that experienced designers have to offer for those starting off in the industry, is to explore all possibilities before deciding on what to specialise in. Working freelance may have its advantages but despite the freedom it allows, freelancers need to work harder than average to establish their own clientele. “It’s always advisable to gain experience under a brand or a professional, before taking on one’s own enterprise,” cautions Payal.
Textile designing
Textile design deals with the fabric itself. In order to become a good textile designer, one would need to study the field — right from history of different fibres and fibre blends to yarns and their various characteristics. Technical knowledge of how textile looms work is also necessary. Textile designers are also responsible for the choice of textiles that are used by the designer to make the end product. For this, the designer would have to take into consideration the purpose of the garment. For example, fabrics used for winter-wear would differ from summer-wear; fabrics that are targeted up-market would have to be crease and wrinkle-proof; etc.Where to study
Textile designing courses not only improve the latent skills of an individual, but also gear the student towards being a professional. Leading fashion institutes such as the NIFT, Pearl Academy, the IIFT, etc, offer diploma courses in textile designing on the postgraduate and undergraduate levels. India Education Centre’s (IEC) School of Arts and Fashion offers a 12-week course on ‘computerised’ textile designing. The course includes training in computer programmes or graphics packages, such as CAD and Corel Draw, which help in pattern making, etc.
Job opportunities
The options open to a fresh graduate in textile designing are as a textile designer, a colourist (a person who deals with colours — predictions, choices, mixes, etc), a fabric manager, a lab manager or a dyeing and printing consultant. Starting salaries are at around Rs 3,500 per month. Experienced designers can even earn above Rs 10,000. A designer can even work as a freelancer on assignments from government-run firms. “The drawback is that companies cater to specific trends. Therefore, new designs and patterns are not as well received as much as they should be,” says Shalini.
Apparel merchandising
Behind the glamour and the creative inspiration, lies an equal amount of perspiration. Merchandising is that aspect of the fashion business that deals with the process of taking a design through the manufacturing process. It is different from marketing, which simply concerns itself with reaching the product to the customer. While the merchandiser’s job is essentially that of coordination, it can be broken down to the following functions:
Understanding the buyer’s needs
Preparing initial samples according to specifications
Getting the samples approved by the buyer
Costing and pricing
Procuring raw material
Production management
On-line quality control inspections during production
Timely delivery of shipments
These functions are spread over three stages. First comes the product development stage, where the merchandiser, along with the fashion designer, come up with a product that is aimed at a specific market segment or demand. In an export house, this translates into coordinating between the buyer’s needs and what the company can provide. Here the designer is not involved with the process, except to provide a sample of what the buyer needs. It is the merchandiser who takes the buyer’s specifications and measurements and produces a sample accordingly.
Once the buyer has a sample to judge, the process has moved into the initial sampling stage. Based on the sample, the merchandiser negotiates a suitable price. This has to be done based on the costs of raw materials, transportation, overheads, etc.
Then comes the production stage, where the merchandiser must procure raw materials, check for discrepancies in materials, carry out on-line quality inspections and get the final approval or inspection certificate from the buyer. The shipment then has to be packaged and transported to the buyer.
Danny Lukose, Merchandiser, Shamken Cotsyn Ltd, describes the merchandiser’s role, “While merchandising is certainly as important a function as designing, it does not carry the glamour normally associated with the fashion industry. This is despite the fact that a merchandiser has equal, if not more, responsibilities than any other person in a company. The onus of the successful running of the company lies upon the merchandiser. He cannot afford even the slightest of slip-ups.”
Mrs Sukanya Dutta Roy, a consultant for KSA Technomat, agrees, “It comes down to the merchandiser to see that the product lives up to the brand image. Although there aren’t many major problems, a merchandiser working in an export house would face the drawbacks common to any other small-scale industry.”

Where to study
Merchandising courses aim at training the students in the comprehensive practical skills and techniques required. Since merchandising is intrinsically important to the fashion industry, almost all institutes carry a diploma course in apparel merchandising. These courses are available at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The apparel merchandising in production management course offered at the Pearl Academy of Fashion would be a typical model, with a course fee of Rs 88,000. This is a one-and-a-half year postgraduate diploma, which includes an industry internship of 12 weeks.
A merchandiser’s job description is an involved one, requiring some knowledge of the production process. A course would be the shortest way to go about making a career in this field. “It’s an exciting job that keeps changing from time to time. It does require a considerable bit of running-around and this can be a drawback for people who do not own their own vehicle. Otherwise, it’s quite a feeling of satisfaction, knowing that your actions are going to make the difference to the company’s success or failure,” says Danny.
Job opportunities
After completion of training, students can join as Merchandiser (Domestic / Overseas), or specialise as Production Manager, Quality Controller, Fashion Retailer, Export Manager, etc. A merchandiser can expect a starting salary of Rs 6,000-8,000. With experience and specialisation, this can even go up to Rs 40,000. At present, there are more jobs available than the number of candidates for them. According to Wg Cdr (Retd) V.K. Gangal, Registrar, Pearl Academy, “We stress on fashion designing and apparel merchandising since there is quite a demand for professionals in the industry. These fields are the mainstays of the industry.”
Associated options
There is a comprehensive course in garment manufacturing technology available, dealing with all the three branches of fashion technology. This course is taught in almost all institutes and aims at developing professionals with an understanding of the functioning of the entire industry. With a select specialisation added, one could carve out a fairly decent niche within the industry. “It gives a complete insight into the apparel industry, be it designing, merchandising or marketing,” says Manisha, a student of the Garment Business Administration course at IIFT. Other avenues within the industry are fashion photography, visual merchandising and fashion journalism.
Fashion photography: Fashion photography is not merely pictures of models on catwalks but rather capturing the designer’s viewpoint through his creations. A designer’s attitude reflects in the garments he designs. It is this attitude that the photographer undertakes to convey. “Nowadays a lot of young people take to photography for merely clicking beautiful faces. Fashion photography is certainly not just that. Rather, it aims at bringing attention to the designer’s endeavour and creative insight without dwelling on his shortcomings. It is not about the clothes which a model wears but instead about saying something about the creator of the garment,” says Mr Pushpinder Singh, a graduate in photography from Triveni Academy and a working freelancer.
While a course in fashion photography is not a pre-requisite, technical aptitude and skills are a must. Many institutes offer generalised courses in photography, after which a person can either specialise in fashion photography, or work with a professional fashion photographer as an apprentice. A full-fledged photographer can work as a freelancer, for an advertising agency or for a fashion magazine. The job includes both studio as well as outdoor shoots. While, in the first two earnings vary, a photographer working for a magazine can earn upwards from Rs 8,000 a month.
Visual merchandising: Visual merchandising is a subject that deals with shop-window decorating. Window display is considered an important part of marketing strategy. It is a means of introducing a product to the customer. “A person on the move does not take more than 7 seconds to glance at a shop window,” says Mr RC Dalal, Executive Director, JD Institute, “The display, therefore, has to be catchy so that it holds the attention of the customer for a longer duration, thereby giving the product its due worth.”
Fashion journalism: Another very interesting aspect is that of fashion journalism. There are no such courses available for its training. However, anyone interested in fashion and with a flair for writing can opt for this stream. Sufficient awareness of the fashion industry is obviously important. Since, this is a part of journalism, a person should have all the abilities of a good journalist, such as a nose for ferreting out facts, command over language and a good vocabulary and of course, the ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure.
Ms Ritu Raizada, Fashion Journalist, The Indian Express, talks about her job, “Since I’d been interested in fashion and have been into writing since my school days, I chose this career. It’s like opting for the best of both worlds. Of course, fashion history as well as its study is important. After all, one cannot write on a subject that one knows nothing about. One should know the feel of the fabric besides the texture, sheen, colour, contour, etc. Many ignorant fashion journalists don’t event know the difference between lilac and lavender. Fashion journalism is definitely not just writing about catwalks and showbiz. Articles should not only be factual but should also give enough insight to the fashion industry. A fashion journalist should have a good memory and a penetrating vision. I, personally, try to be aware of my role as a critic. The emphasis should be on constructive criticism. The actual message should be read between the lines.”
A freelancer earns a minimum of Rs 600 for an article with a length of 1,000 words. While a fashion journalist working with a newspaper can expect a starting salary of about Rs 6,000, regardless of the number of articles he or she does.
All said and done, one does not have to go by the book and the industry has more than its fair share of people who have made it big instantly. While there are also those who have spent years trying to move up the ladder. Fashion should not be a career choice based on the glamour or attraction the subject poses towards the young. Rather it should be a well-thought out choice based on the interest, talent and aptitude of the individual.
