SPELLING RULES

Rule 5 – ‘y’ to ‘i’ Rule

When a word ends in ‘y’ with a consonant before it, change ‘y’ to ‘i’ before adding a suffix.

happy + ness = happiness
carry + ed = carried
study + es = studies
baby + s = babies
cry + ed = cried

Note:

Change ‘y’ to ‘i’ only when a consonant comes before ‘y’

Do not apply this rule if a vowel comes before ‘y’
