give competent boys and girls thorough insight
of communication world and to reveal
the mysteries of what is behind TV screen,
impact of a written word,

production of programs,
grammar of visual design, power of
publicity and much more, the department offers
two UGC sponsored undergraduate programs. Mass Communication and Video Production
(MCVP) is three years vocational program
started in 2002. Mass Communication and Multimedia Production
(MCMP) is three years professional
Course started in 2004. The programs are designed to prepare students
for the careers in Filmmaking, Photography,
Reporting, Radio and TV production,
Multimedia Production including Graphic
designing, Animation and Web designing,
Advertising and Public Relations and in wide
range of media professions where they are
able to exploit media technology to unveil
the obscure. The course is supported with
state-of-art infrastructure including Production
Studio equipped with modern gadgetry,
PD and DSLR cameras, complete unit of
digital indoor, outdoor shooting , non-linear
editing suit and Multimedia lab. Government Degree College Baramulla is
the first institute of Jammu and Kashmir
State which provides undergraduate course
in Mass Communication. The institution has
also the distinction of being the only institution
of north India to train students in multimedia
technology and to apply it in various
sub fields of mass communication and journalism. Thus, the department attracts students
from different streams across valley to
get trained at Government Degree College
Baramulla. Every year, the pass outs get admission
in various premier institutions of
communication and journalism of the Country
like AJKMCRC Jamia Millia Islamia, Indian
Institute of Mass Communication, Film
and Television Institute of India, Symbiosis
Institute of Communication etc. The institution
supplied a number of professionals in international, national and in
local media as well.

Special Friday Session, 21/11/2025:
The Department of Media studies organised a special screening session today to celebrate the day of the radio and television, during which the history, evolution, and iconic content of radio and television in India were presented. Students had the opportunity to see selected clips which included radio plays, stories for children, sound effects.
At the end of the event, a quiz based on the day’s screenings took place, which was very interactive with the students actively participating and displaying their knowledge of Indian broadcasting history. The celebration purpose was to give students a better understanding of India’s media heritage and creative journey of radio and television.

04/11/2025: A seminar was held by the Department of Media Studies , with Mr. Mir Ehsan, Senior Assistant Editor and Bureau Cheif Srinagar, Hindustan Times, as the speaker of the seminar.
Mr. Ehsan talked about his work life, mentioning that he began working as stringer and later joined The Indian Express, where he used to cover the J&K section, North Kashmir included. Mr. Ehsan commented that even though journalism has remained the same as before, the Journalism and Media sector have changed largely due to technology.
While addressing the students, he emphasized the importance of the ethics, clarity, consistency and good writing in journalism. He encouraged students to begin by covering small stories, have dedication and to keep learning.

28/10/2025: Department of Journalism and Mass Communication (DJMC), Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST), hosted the Film Festival in collaboration with Film Southasia (FSA). The event aimed to bring internationally acclaimed Travelling FSA 2025 to Kashmir.
Stitch, a film by Department of Media Studies, Government Degree College, Baramulla, bagged the best film award.
