International Nurses Day Celebrated at Government Medical College Baramulla
Baramulla, May 14: The Government Nursing College, Government Medical College Baramulla, on Wednesday celebrated International Nurses Day 2026 with the theme “Our Nurses, Our Future – Empowered Nurses Save Lives.”
The event was inaugurated by Worthy Deputy Commissioner Baramulla, Dr. Syeed Fakhrudin Hamid (IAS), who attended as the chief guest. He was accompanied by Prof. Dr. Majid Jahangir, Principal GMC and GNC Baramulla, Dr. Parvaiz Masoodi, Medical Superintendent GMC Baramulla, and Prof. Dr. Shafqat Ahmad Lone as special guests.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Syeed Fakhrudin Hamid(IAS) described nursing as a noble profession that demands dedication, compassion, love, and care. He assured full support for the establishment of the Nursing College in Baramulla and also called for collective efforts to make the district drug-free.
Prof. Dr. Majid Jahangir highlighted the contributions of Florence Nightingale and appreciated the tireless role of nurses in strengthening patient care services at GMC Baramulla.
The programme featured the nursing pledge and oath ceremony by B.Sc. Nursing students, followed by speeches, cultural performances, competitions, and research project presentations by the outgoing 2021 batch.
Prizes were distributed among the top three rank holders of the 2021 batch and meritorious students who excelled in seminar and research competitions.
The event concluded with a valedictory address by Dr. Shakil ur Rehman, Head of the Department of Pharmacology, and a vote of thanks presented by Dr. Arshid Nazir Shah, Assistant Professor and Organizer Chairperson.
The programme was organized under the patronage of Prof. Dr. Majid Jahangir and Dr. Dilshada Wani, Vice Principal, Government Nursing College Baramulla.

GMC Baramulla Joins Mega Padyatra

Under the supervision of Principal Prof. Dr. Majid Jahangir and Medical Superintendent Dr. Parvaiz Masoodi, GMC Baramulla actively participated in the Mega Padyatra led by the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, UT, in Baramulla. The event witnessed enthusiastic involvement from students, staff, and faculty members of the college.
To ensure safety and preparedness, GMC Baramulla had all emergency medical services available during the event.
The Addiction Treatment Facility (ATF), Department of Psychiatry, presented the institution’s key contributions towards the Nasha Mukt Abhiyan before the Hon’ble LG. The clinical services, awareness & training programs as well as rehabilitation efforts were highlighted.
The Hon’ble LG appreciated the enhancement of ATF infrastructure, notably the construction of a Drug De‑Addiction Centre and the expansion of ATF bed capacity to 20 beds.
This initiative was part of the intensive 100‑day Nasha Mukt Abhiyan campaign against drug abuse, spearheaded by the Hon’ble LG.

GMC Baramulla Observes Nationwide NRP Day
Baramulla, May 10: The Department of Pediatrics, Government Medical College Baramulla, on Saturday conducted a Basic Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Workshop as part of the nationwide NRP Day initiative led by the National Neonatology Forum (NNF) India to strengthen newborn survival and resuscitation care.
Held under the patronage of Principal Prof. Dr. Majid Jahangir and guidance of Prof. Dr. Suhail Ahmad Choh, Head Department of Pediatrics, the workshop was facilitated by Dr. Mohd Irshad and Dr. Syed Kaisar Jan, both national-level NRP trainers. Dr. Mohd Irshad also served as Course Coordinator.
Twenty participants, including postgraduate students, medical officers, junior residents, interns, and nursing officers from the Departments of Pediatrics and Obstetrics & Gynaecology, received hands-on training in neonatal resuscitation through structured skill stations and competency assessments.
All participants were certified as Basic NRP Providers by NNF India, with certification valid for two years. The training was conducted free of cost as part of NNF India’s nationwide mission to improve newborn care and reduce preventable neonatal mortality.

World Red Cross Day Celebration at GMC Baramulla

Government Medical College (GMC) Baramulla celebrated World Red Cross Day on 8th May 2026 with the theme “United in Humanity”. The event was held under the patronage of Prof. Dr. Majid Jahangir, Principal of GMC Baramulla, and organized by the Department of Community Medicine under the guidance of Dr. Uruj, Associate Professor and Incharge HOD Community Medicine.
First-year MBBS students enthusiastically took part in a poster-making competition. Their creative work highlighted the humanitarian values and principles of the Red Cross Movement, with powerful messages of compassion, service, solidarity, and community support.
A rally was conducted within the college premises. Principal Prof. Dr. Majid Jahangir, accompanied by MS Dr. Parvaiz Masoodi and faculty members, joined the students in spreading awareness about humanity, volunteerism, and collective efforts during times of crisis. Students carried placards and raised slogans emphasizing unity, peace, and humanitarian service.
The event served as a platform to inspire young medical students to actively contribute to social welfare and community service. It reinforced the importance of empathy, volunteerism, and collective responsibility in the medical profession.

Plantation Drive by GMC Baramulla

GMC Department of Community Medicine, Government Medical College (GMC) Baramulla, organized a Plantation Drive at Ecco Park Baramulla on 6th May 2026 in collaboration with the Divisional Forest Officer, Social Forestry Division Baramulla under the Family Adoption Program.
The event was conducted under the leadership and guidance of the esteemed Principal of GMC Baramulla, Professor Prof. Dr. Majid Jahangir, whose continuous support and encouragement played a pivotal role in the successful ex*****on of this meaningful initiative.
The plantation drive witnessed enthusiastic participation from 157 first-year MBBS students of GMC Baramulla, along with faculty members, Senior Residents (SRs), Postgraduate students (PGs), and field staff of the Department of Community Medicine. The event was further graced by the presence of the District Forest Officer, who appreciated the institution’s efforts toward environmental sustainability and community welfare.
During the drive, approximately 150 saplings were planted by students and faculty members across the Ecco Park area, significantly contributing to ecological preservation and the promotion of green initiatives.
This activity was organized with the objective of enhancing environmental awareness, promoting sustainable practices, and instilling social responsibility among budding medical professionals. Such initiatives help students understand the vital connection between environmental health and public health while encouraging active community participation.
The plantation drive stands as a reflection of GMC Baramulla’s dedication to holistic education by combining academic excellence with socially responsible and environmentally conscious programs.
The department also extends heartfelt thanks to the Divisional Forest Officer, Social Forestry Division Baramulla, for their valuable collaboration and support in making this initiative a grand success.

Mock Fire Safety Drill Conducted at GMC Baramulla
A mock fire safety drill was conducted by the Fire and Emergency Department, Sopore Headquarters, at Government Medical College (GMC) Baramulla on Tuesday.
The drill focused on raising awareness about fire safety measures and emergency response protocols within the hospital. Fire personnel demonstrated evacuation procedures, proper use of fire extinguishers, and techniques to control fire incidents.
Principal Dr. Prof. Majid Jahangir and Medical Superintendent Dr. Parvez Masoodi, along with students, medical staff, and other employees, participated in the drill, gaining practical knowledge on handling emergency situations. Officials emphasized that such preparedness and timely response are crucial in minimizing risks during fire incidents, especially in critical institutions like hospitals.

The AYUSH Unit of Associated Hospital, Government Medical College Baramulla, has taken a significant step in North India by implementing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of AYUSH and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), aimed at strengthening holistic healthcare for security personnel.
As part of the initiative, a medical camp and yoga session were organised at the CISF Unit, UHEP, Uri, where personnel were screened for non-communicable diseases (NCDs), provided medical consultations, and given free medicines. Female CISF staff were also screened and counselled under the SUPRAJA component of the National Ayush Mission.
The programme was inaugurated by the Commander CISF, UHEP, Uri, along with Dr. Mohammad Shafi Malik (MD), AYUSH, who highlighted the importance of integrating AYUSH services into the CISF healthcare framework to promote preventive and holistic care.
During the event, experts delivered key presentations on lifestyle and musculoskeletal disorders among CISF personnel. Dr. Muzaffar Ahmed Wani (MD), AYUSH, spoke on lifestyle-related issues, while Dr. Iftikar Mushqi (MD), AYUSH, focused on preventive and therapeutic approaches to musculoskeletal conditions. An interactive yoga session was conducted by AYUSH instructor Shri Adnan Shafi.
The Commandant CISF UHEP Uri, in his address, acknowledged the support of Principal GMC Baramulla Prof. Majid Jahangir, Medical Superintendent Dr. Parveez Masoodi, and District AYUSH Officer Dr. Raja Amjad Ali Khan for facilitating the integration of AYUSH services.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Umar Majeed and the Deputy Commandant CISF, followed by a felicitation ceremony recognising the efforts of the AYUSH team.
The initiative marks a progressive move towards enhancing the health and well-being of CISF personnel through the adoption of traditional and preventive healthcare systems.

Foundation Stone Laid for Drug De-addiction Centre and Mortuary at GMC Baramulla

Honourable Minister for Education, Health/Medical Education & Social Welfare, Miss Sakeena Masood Itoo, in the presence of MLA Baramulla Javid Hassan Baig Sb and MLA Uri Dr. Sajad Shafi Sb, laid the foundation stone for a Drug De-addiction Centre and Mortuary at GMC Baramulla.
On the same occasion, she also inaugurated the Digital X-ray facility in the associated hospital of GMC Baramulla. The event was attended by Principal Prof. Dr. Majid Jahangir, Medical Superintendent Dr. Parvaiz Masoodi, S.E R&B, officials of the executive agency, Chief Planning Officer, representatives from the Deputy Commissioner’s office Baramulla, along with CAO,AO,RA & all Heads of Departments (HODs) of the associated hospital GMC Baramulla, Deputy Director Health (DDH)Headquarters, CMO Baramulla and GMC staff members.

SHA Hosts Capacity Building Training at GMC Baramulla

The State Health Agency (SHA) today conducted a Capacity Building Training at GMC Baramulla for hospitals across District Baramulla, District Kupwara, and GMC Baramulla, all under the Ayushman Bharat initiative.
The session was chaired by Principal Prof. Dr. Majid Jahangir, Medical Superintendent Dr. Parvaiz Masoodi, Registrar Academics Prof. Dr. Shafqat Ahmad Lone, CMO Baramulla, and Dr. Misbah from SHA.
During the training, participants were thoroughly briefed on the PM Rahat Scheme and its implementation. This scheme is designed to provide free treatment for road accident victims, covering medicines, diagnostic tests, and other medical services, ensuring timely and cost-free care for those in need.
