SKIMS Soura & GMC Baramulla Hold Workshop on Early Genetic Screening

Baramulla, September 05 — Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Soura, in collaboration with GMC Baramulla, organised a one-day workshop on “UMMID: Early Genetic Screening, Diagnosis and Counselling for a Healthier Future” at Dak Bungalow, Baramulla.

Syed Altaf Hussain Musavi, Additional Deputy Commissioner Baramulla, was the chief guest. The programme brought together doctors, Block Medical Officers, public health workers, and other healthcare stakeholders.

Key lectures were delivered by Dr. Humera Noor, HoD Gynecology & Obstetrics, and Prof. Dr. Farooq Ahmad Sheikh from GMC Baramulla. The workshop emphasized the importance of early identification, screening, diagnosis, and counselling of genetic and metabolic disorders among pregnant mothers and newborns.

The programme included interactive sessions where participants discussed screening procedures, identification of high-risk cases, and counselling mechanisms. Experts from SKIMS and GMC Baramulla shared their expertise, aiming to strengthen the capacity of public health workers in identifying and referring cases for timely management.

Awards of Appreciation were presented to Block Medical Officers and healthcare workers for their active role in promoting awareness and early screening.

The workshop concluded with a reaffirmation of the commitment to advance genetic screening initiatives for maternal and child health.

GMC Baramulla Inaugurates New Embryology Lab

Baramulla: Government Medical College (GMC) Baramulla inaugurated a newly established Embryology Lab at the Department of Anatomy, marking another step towards strengthening academic facilities and medical education.

The facility was inaugurated by Principal Prof. Dr. Majid Jahangir in the presence of Prof. Dr. Shafqat Lone, Registrar Academics; Dr. Parvez Masoodi, Medical Superintendent, Associated Hospital; Bibi Rehan Kazmi, Administrative Officer; and senior faculty members.

Equipped with high-quality models, charts and modern teaching aids, the laboratory will provide medical students with a more visual and interactive approach to understanding human embryological development.

During a tour of the facility, Dr. Berjina Naqshi, Head of the Department of Anatomy, briefed the dignitaries about the lab’s academic utility and highlighted its role in making the subject more conceptual, engaging and clinically relevant.

The new facility reflects GMC Baramulla’s continued efforts to create modern, student-centred learning environments and strengthen academic excellence.

Successful Surgical Management of Empyema at GMC Baramulla

A 60-year-old male patient from Rafiabad, Baramulla, with USG and CT-confirmed right-sided empyema of the chest cavity, was admitted to the Department of General & Minimal Access Surgery, GMC Baramulla.

The patient underwent right posterolateral mini-thoracotomy with decortication under the headship of Dr. Mehmood Rashid, performed by Dr. Mir Mushtaq and team, with anaesthetic support from Dr. Waseem Salman and team. The procedure was conducted successfully under single-lung ventilation, with technical support from Abid.

The patient was successfully extubated on the operating table by Dr. Waseem Salman and team and showed good postoperative recovery.

Following an uneventful recovery, the patient was discharged from the ward in stable condition.

Another successful multidisciplinary surgical intervention at GMC Baramulla, reflecting the institution’s commitment to providing advanced and quality patient care.

GMC Baramulla Celebrates 80th Independence Day with Patriotic Fervour

Baramulla, August 15, 2026:
Government Medical College (GMC) Baramulla celebrated the 80th Independence Day of India with great enthusiasm, patriotic fervour and a strong sense of national pride.

The celebrations commenced with the ceremonial flag hoisting by Prof. (Dr.) Majid Jahangir, Principal, GMC Baramulla, in the presence of Dr. Parvaiz Masood, Medical Superintendent, Administrative Officer, Heads of Departments, faculty members, paramedical and nursing staff, clerical staff and security personnel.

The flag hoisting ceremony was followed by a vibrant cultural programme, in which students showcased their talent through a series of performances dedicated to the nation and the spirit of independence. The performances created an atmosphere of patriotism, unity and celebration across the campus.

The celebrations were held under the constant guidance, encouragement and support of Principal GMC Baramulla, Prof. (Dr.) Majid Jahangir, whose motivation encouraged students and staff to participate wholeheartedly and contribute to making the occasion memorable.

GMC Baramulla Observes World Breastfeeding Week with Week-Long Awareness and Training Activities

Baramulla, August 7: The Department of Paediatrics, Government Medical College (GMC) Baramulla, observed World Breastfeeding Week from August 1 to 7, 2026, with a series of awareness, counselling, training and clinical activities promoting breastfeeding and lactation support.

The week-long programme, held under the supervision of the Head of the Department of Paediatrics, involved healthcare professionals, nursing and paramedical staff, medical students, and mothers. The focus remained on early initiation of breastfeeding, exclusive breastfeeding for six months, and continued breastfeeding with complementary feeding.

The programme began on August 1 with an inaugural session and awareness talks on the benefits of colostrum, immunity from breast milk, and long-term health benefits for mother and child. Emphasis was also laid on skin-to-skin contact and Baby-Friendly Hospital practices.

On August 3, a training workshop was conducted for nursing and paramedical staff on proper latching and positioning, management of feeding issues, breast milk expression and storage, and counselling skills.

Awareness sessions for antenatal and postnatal mothers were held on August 4, followed by a session for mothers and attendants in the SNCU on August 5.

On August 6, breastfeeding counselling was provided in the Paediatric OPD, along with student presentations highlighting the importance of breastfeeding. Counselling booths offered one-to-one support for mothers.

The week concluded on August 7 with hands-on training for mothers of preterm and low-birth-weight babies on breast milk expression, safe feeding techniques, hygiene, and newborn positioning.

The initiative strengthened staff capacity, provided direct counselling to mothers, and reinforced GMC Baramulla’s commitment to Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) guidelines and improved infant health outcomes.

Condolence Meeting Held at GMC Baramulla

A condolence meeting was held today at the Conference Hall of Government Medical College (GMC) Baramulla to mourn the sad demise of the uncle of Prof. (Dr.) Majid Jahangir, Principal, GMC Baramulla, who passed away today after a brief illness.

The meeting was presided over by the Medical Superintendent, Dr. Parvaiz Masoodi, and attended by Heads of Departments, faculty members, doctors, paramedical staff, and secretarial staff of GMC Baramulla and its Associated Hospital.

The participants expressed their heartfelt condolences to Prof. (Dr.) Majid Jahangir and the bereaved family, and offered prayers for the eternal peace of the departed soul. The meeting concluded with Fateha Khawani.

May Almighty Allah grant the departed soul the highest place in Jannat-ul-Firdous and bless Prof. (Dr.) Majid Jahangir and the bereaved family with strength, patience, and fortitude to bear this irreparable loss. Ameen.
