Four earth-sized planets detected orbiting the nearest sun-like star

astronomers have discovered four earth-sized planets orbiting the nearest sun-like star, tau Ceti, which is about 12 light years away and visible to the naked eye.
These planets have masses as low as 1.7 earth mass, making them among the smallest planets ever detected around nearby sun-like stars.

DEBRIS DISKS AROUND STARS COULD POINT THE WAY TO GIANT EXOPLANETS

According to current estimates,there could be as many as 100 billion planets in the milkyway galaxy alone.

Unfortunately, finding evidence of these planets is tough, time-consuming work.

Luckily a new study led by the Infrared Processing and Analysis Center(IPAC) at Caltech has determined that there may be a shortcul to finding exoplanets using direct imaging.

The solution, they claim, is to look for systems with a circumstellar debris disk, for they are sure to have at least one giant planet.

The study, titled "A Direct Imaging Survey Of Spitzer Detected Debris Disks: Occurrence of Giant Planets in Dusty Systems", recently appeared in the Astronomical journal.

For the sake of this study, Dr.Meshkat and her colleagues examined data on 130 different single-star systems with debris disks, which they then compared to 277 stars that do not appear to host disks.

As Dr.meshkat explained in a recent Nasa press release, this study will be of assistance when it comes time for exoplanet-hunters to select their targets:

"Our research is important for how future missions will plan which stars to observe.
Many planets that have been found through direct imaging have been in systems that had debris disks, and how we know the dust could be indicators of undiscovered worlds".

As study co-author Dimitri Mawet, who is also a JpL Senior research scientist, explained:

"it's possible we don't find small planets in these systems because, early on, these massive bodies destroyed the building blocks of rocky planets, sending them smashing into each other at high speeds instead of gently combining."

As karl Stapelfeldt, the chief scientist of NASA's Exoplanet Exploration Program Office and a Co-author on the study, stated:

"By showing astronomers where future missions such as NASA's James Webb space telescope have their best chance to find giant exoplanets, this research paves the way to future discoveries".

A 'Breakthrough' to search for planets in closest star system to earth

Ever since the European Southern Observatory(ESO) announced that they had discovered an exoplanet in the nearby system of proxima centauri, there have been a lot of questions about this exoplanet.

In addtion to whether or not this planet could actually support life, astronomers have also been eager to see if its companion stars-Alpha centauri A and B-have exoplanets too.

As professor Avi Loeb-the Frank B.Baird, Jr. Professor of Science at Harvard and a member of the Breakthroug Starshot Advisory Committee-told via email:

"we hope that the partnership between the breakthrough prize foundation and ESO will lead to the discovery of new habitable planets around the nearest stars. Once discovered, we could search for the molecular signatures of life in the atmosphere of these planets, and potentially even send a spacecraft that will reach them within our lifetime. The latter is the driver for the starshot initiative. The discovery of habitable nearby planets will provide us with targets for photography by gram-scale spacecrafts, launched at a fraction of the speed of light and equipped with cameras. For example, we would like to find out whether such planets are covered by blue oceans, green vegetation or yellow deserts."

Mars Lost Atmosphere to Space

NASA's MAVEN mission has confirmed that the solar wind stripped the red planet of its atmosphere.

Planetary scientists suspect that the red planet has lost anywhere from 25% to 90% of its atmosphere over the last 4-ish billion years, with the estimates favoring at least 50%.

Now, scientists with Nasa's MAVEN orbiter mission have confirmed this hypothesis.

The MAVEN spacecraft loops around Mars, dipping in and out of its upper atmosphere.

MAVEN's observations show that today's Mars has far too little argon-36, if it started out with levels similar to earth and other solar system objects.

Thus, MAVEN confirms that modern mars is a frozen desert world in part because the solar wind blew off its insulation.

SOFIA Confirms nearby planetary system is similar to our own

NASA's flying observatory, the stratospheric observatory for Infrared Astronomy, SOFIA, recently completed a detailed study of a nearby planetary system.

This planetary system is similar to our solar system, located 10.5 light-years away in the southern constellation Eridanus, the star Epsilon Eridani, Eps Eri for short, is the closest planetary system around a star similar to the early sun.

THE SUN PROBABLY LOST A BINARY TWIN BILLIONS OF YEARS AGO

Do you know? Fact about that the universe is filled with binary and even triple star systems.

For centuries, astronomers have wondered why this difference exists and how star systems came to be.

Whereas some astronomers argue that individual stars formed and acquired companions over time, others have suggested that systems began with multiple stars and lost their companions over time.

According to new study by team from Uc berkeley and CfA, it appears that the solar system (and other sun-like stars) may have started out as binary system billions of years ago.

This study, titled "Embedded binaries and their dense cores", was recently accepted for publication in the Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

CURIOSITY HAS DISCOVERED SOMETHING THAT RAISES MORE QUESTIONS ABOUT LIFE ON MARS

Researchers studying Curiosity's data say the rover has detected boron in the 3.8 billion years-old Gale Crater.

Boron is an element that can catalyze the formation of RNA-or ribonucleic acid, the single-stranded carbon copy of DNA found in all living cells-when dissolved in water.

The boron was discovered in calcium sulfate mineral veins suggestive of ancient ground water, so the team believes this could mean at least some of the water once present in Gale Crater had Conditions favorable to the emergence of life.

The findings have been published in the Geophysical Research Letters.
