The Story of the Photoelectric Effect: From Failure of Wave Theory to Einstein's Success
Imagine the year is 1900. Scientists strongly believe that light is a wave, just like water waves.
Scene 1: The Prediction of Wave Theory
A scientist places a clean metal plate in a laboratory and shines light on it.
According to the wave theory:
The energy of light depends on its intensity (brightness).
Brighter light should transfer more energy to electrons.
Even low-frequency light should eventually eject electrons if it shines long enough.
There should be a noticeable time delay before electrons are emitted.
The scientists confidently make these predictions.
---
Scene 2: The Surprising Experiment
The experiment begins.
First, a bright red light is shone on the metal.
Scientists wait...
Nothing happens.
They increase the intensity.
Still nothing!
Next, a weak ultraviolet light is directed onto the same metal.
To everyone's surprise:
Electrons are emitted immediately.
No waiting time is observed.
Even though the ultraviolet light is less intense, the electrons come out with high kinetic energy.
The wave theory is in trouble.
---
Scene 3: Problems Faced by Wave Theory
The experiments reveal three facts:
Fact 1: There is a minimum frequency below which no electrons are emitted.
Fact 2: Electrons are emitted instantly.
Fact 3: Increasing intensity increases the number of electrons but not their maximum kinetic energy.
Wave theory cannot explain these observations.
Scientists are puzzled.
---
Scene 4: Einstein's Revolutionary Idea (1905)
A young scientist named Albert Einstein proposes a bold idea.
He says:
> "Light behaves as if it consists of tiny packets of energy."
These packets are called photons.
Each photon carries energy:
E=h\nu
where:
= Planck's constant
= frequency of light
---
Scene 5: Einstein Explains Everything
A photon collides with an electron in the metal.
If the photon's energy is less than the metal's work function ,
the electron cannot escape.
If the photon's energy is greater than ,
the electron is ejected immediately.
The remaining energy becomes kinetic energy:
K_{max}=h\nu-\phi
Now all observations are explained:
✅ Threshold Frequency: A minimum frequency is required so that .
✅ Instant Emission: One photon transfers its energy in a single collision.
✅ Effect of Intensity: Greater intensity means more photons, hence more emitted electrons, but the energy of each photon depends only on frequency.
---
Scene 6: Victory of Einstein's Theory
The mystery is solved.
The photoelectric effect becomes one of the strongest pieces of evidence that light has a particle nature.
For this explanation, Einstein received the Nobel Prize in Physics 1921 (not for relativity).
Moral of the Story
Wave Theory said:
Energy depends on intensity.
Any frequency should work if intensity is high enough.
Emission should take time.
Experiment showed:
Frequency is the key factor.
Emission is instantaneous.
Threshold frequency exists.
Einstein's Photon Theory explained all observations perfectly and laid the foundation of Quantum Physics.
