to July 15, 2009, and the launch of JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency)’s MAXI (Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image) experiment aboard the space shuttle Endeavour. From its perch on the International Space Station, MAXI scans the sky to catch changes in the X-ray light coming from sources like stars and black holes.

Our NICER telescope, also on the station, teams up with MAXI to catch unpredictable X-ray outbursts with the OHMAN rapid-response system. Through a laptop, MAXI relays new events to NICER so it can take a deeper look: https://go.nasa.gov/4f6EYul
