Astrosat Picture of the Month 05/08/2019

Our Picture of the Month is of the nearby open star cluster M67. The astronomers used their ultraviolet data from AstroSat to determine that a well known Blue Straggler Star in the cluster has a low mass White Dwarf companion. Why is this rather special? Read more to find out about the work of Annapurni Subramaniam and collaborators.

ASTROSAT PICTURE OF THE MONTH

for May 2019 peers into the heart of the Jellyfish Galaxy JO201. The image shows stars forming in a large ring around the centre. Why are no stars forming inside the ring? The authors argue that this is because of the influence of the massive black hole residing in the centre!

Read our at http://astron-soc.in/outreach/apom/ to know more! This work was done by Koshy George, Annapurni Subramaniam and others.

Why does the jellyfish galaxy JO201 form stars in a large ring around its centre? Does the massive black hole lurking in the centre influence whether stars form near it?
