...Did you know Odisha was the first state in India formed on the basis of language?

Utkal Diwas, observed on 1st April, marks the formation of Odisha as a separate province in 1936 during British rule. Before this, Odia-speaking regions were divided across different presidencies such as Bengal and Madras.

The creation of Odisha is an important milestone in India’s political and linguistic history. It highlights how language played a key role in shaping regional identity and administration long before the linguistic reorganisation of states in 1956.

Understanding events like Utkal Diwas helps to place regional history within the larger story of India’s development.
